Eleanor de Ghize (1896-1981)

She was born Eleanor May Jencks in New York in 1896, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Bryn Mawr.  She studied at the Art Students League of New York summer school in Woodstock, NY in 1921.  She studied under Charles Rosen. Eleanor May Jencks married Russian Count Alef de Ghize at her home in Baltimore, Maryland on March 28, 1925.  The New York Times wedding announcement, March 29, 1925, described her as the "daughter of Mrs. Francis M. Jencks of West Mount Vernon Place.  . . .Following the wedding the couple left for New York, and from there will sail for Europe.  They will spend several months traveling on the continent.  Miss Jencks is a member of the Charcoal Club and the Junior League and active in the work of the Friends of Art.  She also has appeared with the Vagabond Players, and is well known in society circles of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore.  She has studied art in Europe.  . . .The present Count de Ghise received his early education from private tutors, under whose care he traveled through Europe."

1939-1940  New York World's Fair
For this 1939-1940 exhibit in New York, one work of art was selected to represent each state in the USA.  The selection for Maryland was Eleanor de Ghize's, Shanty-town House.  Other artists included in this same exhibit: Georgia O'Keefe - New York, Grant Wood - Iowa, N.C. Wyeth - Delaware, among others.  Eleanor de Ghize was one of two IBM Purchase Prize winners for Maryland (the 2nd winner was exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco.)

1939 Maryland Artists Exhibition Purchase Prize, Down the Hall, oil on canvas, 24”x15”, Baltimore Museum of Art museum purchase.  Jencks/de Ghize won prizes in many of these annual Maryland artist exhibitions.

1939 IBM Purchase Prize winner from Maryland, Shanty-town House for the 1939 – 1940 New York World’s Fair Exposition, IBM’s Gallery of Science and Art Exhibition.  Other artists included in this exhibit were Georgia O’Keefe representing New York, Grant Wood representing Iowa, N.C. Wyeth representing Delaware, among others.
