| Joseph W. Gies was born in Michigan in 1860. Gies studied in New York at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union, and Art Students League, and continued at the Royal Academy in Munich, and in Paris at Académie Julian with William Bourereau and Robert-Fleury. When the Detroit Museum School opened in 1890, he became a member of the faculty. In 1895 he opened the Detroit Fine Arts Academy and taught there until 1911. During winters he made painting trips to other parts (showing 500 of 702 characters). |
