This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Ellen Fisher was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and moved to Brooklyn, New York as a child with her doctor father. There she married Edward Thornton Fisher in 1869.

She became known for her watercolor floral and foliage still lifes, and was primarily self-taught although she learned art techniques from her younger brother, Abbott Thayer, who studied at the Brooklyn Art School and the National Academy of Design.

She exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association from 1867 to 1884 and in five exhibitions of the National Academy of Design from 1868 to 1880. In 1885, her work was shown at the Pennsylvania Academy.

From 1884 to 1887, she had a contract with the Prang Company for all of her work, which they reproduced as chromo- lithographs for greeting cards. She acquired a distinguished reputation and was able to command good prices for her painting, something unusual for women of that time.
