This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Austria on Feb. 28, 1884. Kern (né Koschitz) was studying at the Royal Academy in Munich at the onset of WWI. Inducted into the German army, he spent five years in Russian prison camps. After escaping to China in 1919, he made his way to California and settled in the small town of Millbrae near San Francisco. He worked as a house painter and decorator of movie houses during the 1920s. He later established a bakery in Millbrae and at one time was in competition with Kilpatrick's. All of the doors and cabinets in his cottage-studio at 61 Mateo Avenue were decorated with flowers of his design and the ceilings were covered with frescoes of European scenes. His landscapes of the Sierra Nevada and the area around his home are executed in detailed realism reflecting his Munich training. Kern died in Millbrae on Sept. 17, 1975. Exh: Duncan Gallery (NYC); Society for Sanity in Art, CPLH, 1940, 1945; SWA, 1955; First Nat'l Bank (Millbrae), 1973-76.
