| Following is the text of the artist's obituary.
MARION, MASSACHUSETTS - Lucien O. Lavoie, 81, of Marion, died Saturday, January 14,
2006 at home. He was the widower of the late Georgette (Girouard)
Lavoie and the son of the late Medard and Alphonsine (Daigle) Lavoie.
He was born on May 21, 1924 in St. Basile, New Brunswick, Canada.
His family moved to Gardner, MA during the Depression, where he
attended the Holy Rosary School, then he entered the Order of the
Marist Brothers in Poughkeepsie, NY at age 14 to 21. He taught
for one year at St. Ann's School in Lawrence, where he had Robert
Goulet as a student in the sixth grade.
Lucien then enlisted in the United States Navy for four years during
World War II. He attended the U.S. Naval School of Photography in
Pensacola, Florida. He then served aboard the aircraft carrier
U.S.S. F. D. Roosevelt as a photographer. He toured most
Mediterranean countries including Portugal, Gibraltar, Italy, Sicily, Malta, Morocco, Algeria,
Libya, France and Greece. His ship also visited Trinidad, Haiti and
Guantanomo, Cuba. Lucien had the privilege of meeting many
celebrities such as Pope Pious XII. After his discharge from the Navy,
he attended and graduated from the Mass College of Art in Boston,
majoring in Art Education.
In 1954, he began his teaching career at Tabor Academy in Marion where
he stayed for 40 years. He also coached hockey, soccer, lacrosse
and was a dorm master for 23 years. In 1964, he studied in San
Miguel de Allende, Mexico. In the 1990s he traveled to Arizona
and New Mexico. Much of his art work, including paintings, weldings,
wood carvings, photos and aluminum projects have exhibited in Boston,
Providence, Las Vegas, Hyannis, Falmouth, New Bedford and Marion.
Survivors include his daughter, Monique Lavoie and her husband Paul
Corbeil of Thornton, CO; his son, Regis Lavoie and his wife Joyce of
Mattapoisett; 2 grandchildren, Joel and Chad; a brother, Roger Lavoie
of Worcester; his good friend, Bob Mogilnichi; and many in-laws,
nephews and nieces. He was the brother of the late Roland, Gil and
Doris Lavoie and Therese Manseau.
His memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 22,
2006 in the Wickenden Chapel at Tabor Academy, Marion. Burial will be
in Old Landing Cemetery, Marion.
