| Born in Marysville, CA in 1872, Alice Rideout grew up in San Francisco
where her father, Captain J. Ransom Rideout, operated a fleet of
steamers on the bay. Following graduation from high school, she
studied art locally at the School of Design and with Rupert Schmid.
The winner of a national competition, she did the pediment and groups
on the façade of the Women's Bldg at the Chicago World's Fair in
1893. Returning to San Francisco, she married Fred Canady,
abandoned her art career, and moved to Staten Island, NY where she
remained.
