This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in New York state near Norwich, landscape painter George Cook showed early art talent and insisted on following that interest rather than a career in law, which his parents encouraged.

At age 20, he went to Boston and became a student of John Enneking. In 1888, he went to Europe where he spent the next two decades that included enrollment in the Academie Julian in Paris.

In 1929, he returned to the United States and settled in North Carolina, where much of his work was destroyed by fire.
