Born in Mount Kisco, New York, Andrew Young gave up microbiology studies at the University of California, Berkeley, to become an artist. He studied in Siena, Italy on a Rotary Scholarship and adopted techniques and styles of the 15th century artists who used egg tempera on panel. The medium has a luminous quality on flat surfaces. He returned to take art training at Berkeley and then earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. He established his studio in Chicago.
