Biography from Wassenberg Art Center:
| Kay R. Sluterbeck (1947- ) was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She
showed artistic talent at a young age, and received basic instructions
from her mother, who was a skilled amateur artist. The family
moved to Van Wert, Ohio, in late 1959. She studied under artist
Richard Dunn from 1960-64 and began taking paid commissions shortly
thereafter. In the late 60s she took a course in commercial art
from Art Instruction Schools, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She began
her professional career doing illustrations for small publications and
commercial advertisers. When she began working as a freelance
writer and illustrator for The Wretched Mess News, a humorous
publication based in West Yellowstone, Montana, the editor encouraged
her to develop her talent for humorous artwork. She studied
cartooning under Leo Stoutsenberger, a Connecticut watercolorist and
cartoonist, and shortly thereafter became the editorial cartoonist for The Times-Bulletin of Van Wert, Ohio.
Dividing
her time between cartooning, commercial commissions and fine art, she
took commissions until the late 1990s, when she stopped taking most
commissions to concentrate on fine art. Known for her ability to
work in a wide range of styles, she is best known for both landscapes
and surreal/humorous art.
Sluterbeck works in numerous
mediums, including acrylic, colored pencils and watercolor, and has
received local and national awards for her work, including an
Associated Press award for cartooning. She continues to provide
editorial cartoons for The Times-Bulletin.
She is a
member of the Wassenberg Art Center Association, the Lima Area
Watercolor Society, and the West Central Ohio Artists' Guild. She
is unmarried and lives in Van Wert, Ohio as of this writing (2001).
