Although primarily known as a teacher responsible for the educational development of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Christian Schussele was also a painter of portraits and history and genre paintings. He served as a professor of drawing and painting at the Academy, emphasizing the figure, from 1868 until 1879, when he died. Thomas Eakins, a former student of Schussele, who named him his assistant in 1876, assumed Schussele's position upon his death.
