| Born in Kirkwood, IL on Nov. 10, 1884. Ryder studied at UC Berkeley, ASL in NYC (1906-08), and in Munich at the Hans Hofmann School and the Royal Bavarian Academy. During 1917-18 he was director of the Oakland Art Gallery and professor of art at UC from 1926-55. A resident of Berkeley for most of his life, he died there on Feb. 17, 1960.
