|  From New Hampshire, Harrison Eastman was an artist, engraver, and illustrator whose "historically-important works rank him as one of California's most treasured pioneer artists" (340). Eastman also became an accomplished water colorist and illustrator, contributing to numerous local magazines including Hutching's Magazine. The year he arrived in California, 1849, he painted a portrait of James Marshall, who had discovered gold in that state, and this painting was key to establishing Eastman's reputation as an artist. His watercolors at the 1857 Mechanics' Institute Fair won first prize.
After his arrival in California, he first worked for several companies as a lithographer and wood engraver, and then established an engraving company, where he worked for ten years. He was joined by two other artists, William Keith and Pascal Loomis.
