Joane Cromwell Wynonah Breazeale Johnson, art critic and special correspondent for the "Los Angeles Times", wrote in 1936: "Joane Cromwell has transferred to canvas nature's beauty with such sincerity, strength and charm that her paintings bring to the onlooker the very sound, as well as the life, of sea and rugged rocks, arching trees, majestic mountains, and lambent sky...The artist has brought a vast depth of feeling as well as exquisite color, and a bold sense of flowing life to her canvasses."
