Lumen Winter, Flight Into Egypt
I have an original Lumen Winter painting Flight Into Egypt. Since Lumen was more known for his horse paintings - does that make this painting more - or less valuable?

Any ideas on value?

Tks - Brian

Four Horses
I have a painting similar to the ones already mentioned. A large, sofa sized paining with a large white horse in the front, a brown one behind her, then another white and brown one behind those. They look as if they are on a stormy plain to me. My family had a copy when I was a child that stuck with us for a very long time. However it got lost at some point, and I have run across another. However, it is a bit warped, and was wondering if I could find one in better shape. I would also like to know a little more about the painting if possible. I grew up with horses, and a troubled childhood. I can remember laying in bed staring at that picture almost nightly wishing I could be on that stormy plain with those horses. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Giclee Prints
Do your own research before buying Giclee prints. They are perfectly legal and very fine reproductions. However in the case of Lumen M. Winter, he died in 1982. The Giclee process was not developed until the early 1990's. Therefore, inspect any Giclee print of Lumen Winter's you may purchase, especially if claimed to have his original signature on it. Here is a Wikipedia entry for Giclee:

The earliest prints to be called "Giclée" were created in the early 1990s on the Iris Graphics models 3024, 3047, 4012 or "Realist" colour drum piezo-head inkjet printers (the company was later taken over by Scitex). Iris printers were originally developed to produce prepress proofs from digital files for jobs where color matching was critical such as product containers and magazine publication. Their output was used to check what the colors would look like before mass production began. There was much experimentation that took place to try to adapt the Iris printer to the production of color faithful, aesthetically pleasing reproductions of artwork. Early Iris prints were relatively fugitive and tended to show color
degradation after only a few years. The use of newer inksets and printing substrates have extended the longevity and light fastness of Iris prints.

Again, do your research before buying a Lumen Winter Giclee.

Sketch by Lumen Winter
So glad to find this site. I have a framed sketch 22" x 29" framed. It is penciled signed Lumen Winter, and dated 1972. It is numbered 1/10. There is also penciled info at the bottom that reads "Family Group, Titan's Mural, United Nations, New York". The sketch is done in a sienna color. It depicts a seated woman holding a baby above her head. It also shows another figure in the background. I have done some research and have found that Mr. Winter was in fact commissioned by the General Assembly to do a mural that is located on the third floor in the passage connecting the Conference and General Assembly Buildings. I have looked everywhere for a picture of this mural. To date I have not been able to locate one. Does anyone have any idea how I might obtain this picture? Do they perhaps have a gift shop at the United Nations where they might offer souvenir postcards? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I would love to know if my sketch was part of the planning for this work.

I also have the 3 horse painting
I too have the 3 horse painting that you mention, Denise. In addition, I have the Japanese Maple print,my favorite. My parents were friends/acquaintances of Mr. Winter while they lived in Kansas. While I don't know Mr. Winter's full history, I understand he too spent time in Kansas, and in fact was commissioned to paint a murel for the state of Kansas Capitol building. I'd welcome any and all feedback regarding these paintings, as well as information on Mr. Winter's wonderful artistic history.
