info on painting signed J.G Brown. N.A 1874
Hi, I have a painting that is signed in the lower left J.G.Brown. N.A. 1874. It is of a girl with short hair stepping on stones across a stream of water. It is nicely framed, however I believe it is a reproduction but it does not have anyone else's name on the picture, but on the back as with may of you, there is a Vanguard Studios sticker with the written #420514. There is another hand written number that also appears on a white sticker on the back of the photo, as well as a number 8900.00 which I believe was the purchase price of this painting. On the white sticker it states the same written number next to the written price, this number is 001[*]00208-1
VANG 420514 Crossing Bridge
RCV 7085A 040590
Any information on this what I believe to be a preproduction painting, however it is only signed by whom the original painter would have been and that is
Again any information would be appreciated and I can be contacted via email at email@example.com or by phone at
Looking for any into on this painting, or anyone with mutual interest as I have inherited this painting and it is sitting in our office.
Thank you in advance for your time, Amy
Pottery Lamp signed Lee Reynolds
Of everything I have read on the internet, I see no mention of pottery or lamps? This one is rather large southwestern style pottery. Could this be one of Vanguards "products" with Lee Reynolds signature?
If so, how do I find approximate value?
Lee Burr Painting
I have a painting signed Lee Burr, a boy and girl in tall fur hats sitting on steps, holding two balloons. It has Vanguard in black marker on the back and the # 4902E on it. It seems real, I know the gal who had it roughly 30 yrs. But just now found this from Lee that states differently, "LEE BURR
No paintings signed “Lee Burr” done at Vanguard Studio’s, ever touched my hand. Only edition Graphics and signed posters bear the signature “LEE BURR” and that signature is authentic." Now is he saying there are no paintings signed Lee Burr that are real, or that there simply are no paintings with Lee Burr signed at all? Confusing, let me know, thanks. Chris Larson.

Lee Reynolds painting
I have a 4.5' x 5.5' painting of people window shopping on a paris street. Would love to know the approximate value. Owed and enjoyed for 34 years, but the never know what the future might bring. It is signed Lee Reynolds.
I have a painting side view of an old 3 story house in the country 1/4 of a fense, powerlines behind it and a open mailbox in front. Its signed by Van Guard in the top left corner.
Van Gaard reads "Sample" 201C
I have a large signed "Van Gaard" Painting that seems to be of a castle on water perhaps. It is dark green, black, and golds. It has "SAMPLE" written on back and the number 201C also. It has Van Gaard Studios North Hollywood California on it. Just wondering if maybe this was original and authentic.
I as an Artist have done no more than 200 "Original" Paintings and Sculptures in my life.
Lee Reynolds was simply a trade name. It was attached to numerous artworks and designs at Vanguard Studios. Vanguard Studios was the largest distributor of decorative art in the world at the time. I guided product development. I was personally responsible for many designs, prototypes, and compositions; however, no "LEE REYNOLDS" signed paintings were actually done by my hand.
In fact, paintings sold internationally, bearing the signature "LEE REYNOLDS" were in every case painted by Staff Artists in the employ of Vanguard Studios. Vanguard Studios sold ONLY decorative art, NOT collector art.
No paintings signed “Lee Burr” done at Vanguard Studio’s, ever touched my hand. Only edition Graphics and signed posters bear the signature “LEE BURR” and that signature is authentic.
Paintings signed “Lee Burr” and done at East Park Gallery only rarely touched my hand. Almost all were produced by my then assistant Rudolpho Carlos, and were responses to commissions from art dealers. They were done and offered in any number of sizes and colorations. They were interpretations deriving from an example work conceived and executed entirely by my hand.
A few of these examples and only a few actually done by my hand at East Park Gallery were ever released; simply because paint was splattered on them over time by my assistant as he produced derivative works. We called such works “series originals”. These artworks were then priced from about $1,000 to $2,000 US.
Important: To identify authorship, and eliminate confusion I now sign all my personal works- those done entirely by my hand- with my full name- Lee Reynolds Burr. I have recently added a thumb print to such original works. I hope this eliminates some of the confusion.
Van Guard Artwork
Yes, I too have a piece of artwork by Van Guard. Ours is 3'X 5',framed, horses with armour..green background with black horses and gold highlights.
We do not know anything about this art.
What I am learning is that it seems like all this art was mass produced by "starving artist". It would be nice for Lee Reynolds Burr to post info so as to put to rest all these questions. :)

2 Horses (Raised painting, signed Lee Burr)
My grandmother just passed this year (2014). When we (the family) were going thru her and my grandfather's belongings, we found this large painting. Sticker on back says Turner Wall Decor and $29.99 in marker or paint on the back as well. My dad and his oldest sibling said my grandparents (very wealthy) had traveled too many different countries around the world and this picture used to hang in their living room since they were in diapers and they're in their late 50s. I'm not interested in selling this artwork since it was passed on to me and my daughter LOVES horses.. Just curious is all..

Mixed Medium Painting
I have just purchased a mixed medium abstract painting from a yard sale and was curious who the artist might be. It looks to be on heavy rag board or Bristol board, with folded over painted rag paper . The medium looks like heavy textured acrylic paint of blue/green/white/brown. There is gold and dark green paint drizzled all over and 3 small gold foil pieces. The piece is flat mounted on a gold foil mat with a marbleized blue inlay, and a gold (Nielson ?) frame. The od of the painting is 22"X30" and the od of the frame is 30" X 36". Any information you can pass along would be welcomed. Thank you.

Lee Reynolds Burr....
Lee Reynolds Burr owns a mass producing painting company in Beverly Hills, Ca called Vanguard Studios. Paintings were mass produced by students, or out of work painters, Reynolds himself never painted them. These were made so the average family could own a real oil painting. If you search Vanguard Studios you can find a more in depth history. I have a large painting too and was hoping it was worth something...unfortunately this was my search results. This makes sense when you look closely at the signature on his paintings on ebay you will see the signature has subtle differences on each one.
Lee Reynolds / Market Day
I have a large painting signed by Lee Reynolds. I know most of these were signed by artists that copied them at Vanguard Studios. Were all paintings produced by Vanguard identified by stampings and/or stickers? My particular painting has nothing identifying Vanguard Studios as the producer. Could this possibly be a original Lee Reynolds Burr painting. Three different sets of numbers on the back are
933511 on the edge of the canvas
108189 on a cross frame support
180-51369-8 on the canvas right above the words "Market Day"
Anyone got any idea abut this? Thanks.
I was an artist at Van guard studios
In the late 1970s I lived in Hollywood Cal. I read an ad in the help wanted section "ARTIST WANTED" I went to the address in Chatsworth Cal.There in a large warehouse I was interviewed By Tom Piesake I am not sure of the spelling. His wife's name was Peaches. I was given an art test that consisted of trying to copy a painting of forest trees and a stream. After being critiqued by Tom I was hired as a Vanguard artist.I had to purchase my own brushes that were for sale there. I worked with perhaps 20 other artiest. We were given a sample painting designed by Lee Reynolds / Burr and we copied it by stenciling it on canvas or Masonite boards. We then filled in the colors matching as close as we could to the original painting. We would do as many paintings as we could as we were paid in piece work Getting as little as 75 cents to 4 dollars per painting. At the finish of the paintings we would then sign on the lower right hand side the signature LEE REYOLDS and sometimes Burr. We carefully practiced as to resemble his original signature. We were then told to turn the paintings over and to give it a # on the back. That number was the number of the particular artist that painted the painting. I don't remember my number but I think it was for tallying up how many paintings I did so as to get paid. It was very cold in the winter time and we had to were sweaters coats and gloves while we painted. It was sweltering hot in the summer and we brought in fans to keep us cool. Each artist worked in what were long booths that were about 10ft. by 4 feet by 10ft. There we would put canvas's side by side on both sides of the narrow booths. At the end of the booth was the original sample painting. We would be covered in acrylic paint at the end of the day.The paint was in our hair and all over our bodies. We could stand our clothes up in a corner they were saturated with so much acrylic pant Yes the painting were acrylic. They would send the paintings over to the spraying department to be coated with a varnish and were sold as "OIL PAINTINGS" It was a sweat house for starving artist. A lot of very talented artist worked there. Val Bustoe now is a designer at Summerset furnishing, Linda Weber and many more who I can not remember as it was so long ago. Some tried to start a union for the artist but to no avail. I later had my own half hr. Show in the Chicago area called "Mural mural on the wall" I moved to Las Vegas and sell my paintings in the Las Vegas area and on Mary Rucker artist rising web site.
Lee Reynolds Burr
The signature "Lee Reynolds" indicates a staff artist from Vanguard Studios, California's famous art workshop.
Lee Reynolds Burr, Vanguard Art Director, permitted the signature "Lee Reynolds" to be affixed to the best works conceived and executed at Vanguard Studios.
More than 35 years ago, Burr assigned creative guidance to others and liquidated his interest in Vanguard Studios.
"Born in Los Angeles, Lee Burr has a BFA from the University of Southern California. He has served as Chairman, Board of Directors of East Park Gallery in Los Angeles.
He was the director for Vanguard Studios in Beverly Hills, California in the late sixties, and he signed his early works as Lee Reynolds."
planetnomads made a very astute post. I have the feeling he may have worked for the studio. Lee and Stu were the owners; however, the artists signed the names on the paintings--or it may have been Jim (the artist warehouse manager) who signed them. If you note, they all are very similar signatures. They often changed the names of the 'artist' because they wanted diversity. Who would believe that one artist created thousands and thousands of original paintings. Lee lived in Beverly Hills and that is how the company became known as Vanguard Studios Beverly Hills--sounds much nicer than Vanguard Studios of North Hollywood or Chatsworth, CA. When they did the Beverly Hills location would have been after 1970s. G
one more thing
After the company moved to Chatsworth, Mr. Greeley had some labels printed up (quite nice oval and in gold paper) and they were affixed to the paintings. Made the painting appear more valuable. After 1972+/- they may have become more business savvy and started numbering the paintings, etc.
I worked at Vanguard Studies '66-69
I worked for Vanguard Studios as one of 2 women in the office. It was my first job. Vanguard was one of a few companies who made "original" works of art--they were actually mass produced by various artists. Lee and brother Stu (last name forgotten) owned the company. Lee was the artist; Stu the administrator. The 'original' paintings were often done on particle board; the more expensive ones, on canvas. The system they devised was to paint the background--note many are quickly brushstroked with various colors and allowed to dry. Then they used a sencil and employed black ink to outline the guideline for the painting. What comes next is pure genius. The artists all had to have the ability to copy the original painting so that it looked like the next. Because they were hand done, they were 'originals'--that is each was a copy of the original work. The artists worked in a large warehouse with long rows of slanted boards on stilts (this was their easel (sp?) and they set up a numbrer of preped boards or canvases. This way the artist could do one thing and then move down to the next and repeat his efforts. Eventually all the paintings would be done at the same time and looked just like the others. Many of the artist were from other countries--Argentina seemed to dominate. One artist, who was most flamboyant and young was Aldo Louongo (sp?). Apparently he was special (the ladies thought the same of him), for he did only canvas work.. when he showed up. When I first heard of him, he was doing his work in Vegas and shipping them in to the company (I think). Then he showed up with his battered small 2 seater sports car (which broke down in the desert on the way to North Hollywood and had to be towed in) and worked with the others in the warehouse. These were his salad days. He has now become famous. Don't know about the other artists. About 1967, Lee's cousin (I believe) started working with polyurithane (sp) foam and was also developing a paint line. The polyurathane 'wall sconces' were the first to be mass produced. A mold was made and the foam poured in. It was allowed to harden and popped out of the mold. The sconce was then painted and offered for sale. I think one of the first to be made was the face of a spanish conquistador(sp?) that was 3D. At that time, the 70s Spanish era of home decor was just starting. Vanguard paintings were signed by all the artists but the names changed--some were signed Lee Burr, Lee Reynolds. When I got married, I was given a copy of the USS Constitution on canvas that is signed by Lee Reynolds. (I still have the painting). It may have been painted by Aldo Louango (sp?) or by the warehouse manager Jim (last name unknown). No way to determine as they both painted these. The paintings ranged in size from small to large--they could take up much of the wall. I remember some small ones of children with big eyes, French street scenes, and large ones were often done with two colors. The operation was located on Fulton Avenuem North Hollywood, CA (just north of Sherman Way and across the street from a porno magazine publishing company. The publisher often had photo shoots in their offices. We all knew when the photo shoots were scheduled, as the artists would often gather at the doors/ windows to watch the models. We were easly entertained back then. Vanguard was a one stop company--they made the paintings and the frames for the paintings. They shipped the paintings just about every day to every part of the country. About 1969 the company moved to Dearborn Ave, Chatsworth, CA. From there, I do not know. I remember a few names other than Aldo and Jim. Laurie was the office manager I worked with (she died about 1972) and a Mr. Greeley (his relatives founded Greely Colorado--he was the office manager and came from Union Bank--which Vanguard had accounts with. Have not thought of the company in years; wonder where everyeone is now.
reynolds and lee reynolds
We have 12 "reynolds" paintings hanging in our offices. some are signed just "Reynolds" and some are "Lee reynolds" but they are all from the Vanguard studio and must have been purchased in the 60 or 70's. Lee Reynolds Burr Information
Lee Reynolds Burr ran Van Guard Studios from 1964- through- 1979. Lee Reynolds Burr left Van Guard studios in 1979. Anything produced after that time was not done so under his supervision.
Most of the "original" paintings, prints, and Vanathane sculptures were only supervised by Burr. He actually painted very few things. He did design original sketches for many of the other works of art that Van Guard sold. Van Guard also licensed their work to other sellers, so you may find various names on your art.

Contacting Lee Burr
I see that many of you would like to know more, all I found was this artical about Frame & Art Services buying out Vanguard Studios, (Producers of the paintings), so you might use these names to find out more.
LOS ANGELES--In July, Aesthetic Frame & Art Services acquired certain assets of Windsor Art/Vanguard Studios from Interiors Inc. Windsor/Vanguard specializes in quality framed art and mirrors.
Aesthetic Frames & Art Services, a primary, full-service designer and manufacturer of decorative mirrors and framing for guestroom art and art displays for the hospitality industry, acquired the assets of Windsor/Vanguard to further expand its distribution channel to the U.S. retail home furnishings and home accent markets.
"Our company already has a strong presence with leading decorators, interior designers and lodging companies throughout the U.S." said Jon Moldafsky, c.e.o. for Aesthetic Frame & Art Services. "Combining our respective experience and expertise is a strategic venture for Aesthetic that will position us well for future growth."
Windsor/Vanguard Studios includes two distinct product lines. Windsor serves the high-end segment of the framed art and mirror market, which Vanguard markets to the middle segment of the market. Each line has been in existence for more than 25 years in the home furnishings and accessories marketplace. Aesthetic Frame & Art plans to continue to support both lines with independent product design and distribution.
Windsor/Vanguard products will maintain their brand names and continue to introduce new products as part of the line. Additionally, Windsor/Vanguard will be integrated into Aesthetic's Los Angeles location. Aesthetic has offered the opportunity for many of the people to work and support the Windsor/Vanguard lines.
According to the company, Larry Leeb, executive vice president of Aesthetic Frame & Art Services, will oversee the sales and marketing efforts.
Value of paintings
I see that many of you are wondering what the value of your painting is, I hope you all realize that they are production paintings, basically painted by numbers, there is very little possibility that any of you have an original Lee Reynolds. They are actually painted by real artists, but like I said, they silkscreen the images onto the canvas in batches, then line them and start adding the colors. I sued to work for them back in 1977.
I still see some of them in stores and hotels.

Lee Reynolds Site coming soon!
I am Lee's nephew and am putting a site together for all of you! You will be able to upload your digital photos, and Lee Reynolds Burr himself will review and comment. Additionally we will separate the artworks into catagories. Many have already sent photo's to me. Some of you have some potentially valuable classic pieces. This service will be free to you. Please be patient. I started awhile back on this project, and have had some health issues come up. We are now back on the path to getting this together. We hate to see people selling so called originals on ebay that are not originals. We will clarify and classify all art submitted as best as humanly possible.
Lee thanks you all.

I have a few Lee Reynolds
I'm not sure at the time of this writing if what your painting is worth. However, I've seen them sell from 500 up to 5000. It seems the flower series are more pricey than the abstract ones. I don't know if it's a vanguard student of his, or LR himself, but the ones I have are absolutely beautiful. Two of flower series and one of a sailboat. They are all over my place and receive great reviews from anyone who visits. I've seen them on ebay and other gallery postings so maybe you should contact your local museum and ask for a reputable appraiser for your painting before your proceed to sell it. Good luck!
I have an AMAZING canvas painting by Lee Reynolds and it is about 6 feet by 4 1/2 feet tall and it is of a city scape and it has the most unusual bird in the center because it is in the perfect shape of a soaring bird flying toward the city scene but its a tear guy said it was there when he bought it at a garage sale, some of the auctions for Lee Reynolds with the same signature on ebay are going for like 950 dollars, I was wondering if anyone had more information on this painting send me an email and let me know I can send pictures via email attachment and will do anything to get some info!
Lee Reynolds Burr
I have a 4'x 5' southwest perhaps a pueblo indian village adobe structure with many wooden poles and mountains in background. It is signed Lee Reynolds. Any info would be appreciated.
HUGE Lee Reynolds Painting
I have a painting I purchased several years ago signed Lee Reynolds. It's HUGE! Abstract with peach, purple, white, pale green colors. Oil on canvas. Almost 3 dimensional. Gorgeous. Just wondering if he actually did it or one of his Vanguard Students. It is signed at the bottom right.
It seems to me that Lee Reynolds paintings were mass produced much like the starving artist sales at your local Inns. I have been unable to find an example of his signature. I have seen several versions of my painting--same general picture-different colors and painting style. All with Lee Reynolds name--all different writing. I like the picture so it really makes no difference. The signature on mine is very unique and I have seen it on at least 2 other paintings. If anyone has an actual example or would let me know where I could view an actual signature I would greatly appreciate it.

huge oil painting by Lee Reynolds
We have enjoyed this beautiful oil painting signed by Lee Reynolds of a dark Mexican man in a sombrero hat seated among several clay pots and a basket. The colors are terra cotta, burnt orange, white and gray, mainly. It is 4 by 5 ft.. The number 634 and letters GnH are in black marker on back.
We have detailed photos we could mail or email if anyone can help us to discover if it is an original.
Lee Reynolds Painting
At the risk of just being the latest in the growing list if inquiries about authenticity, is it possible to discern whether the 4 by 5 foot oil on canvas painting I own is an original by Lee Reynolds Burr as opposed to one of his students? It is a bi-plane apparently from the Wright Brothers era with the name LEE Reynolds signed in the lower left corner and the number 611 on the back with the initials lr or lb. Any comments or advice? I would be willing to send a photo to an authorized party.
So, my boyfriend just bought a Lee Reynolds painting. But, we do not know much about the artist and if it is an original.
Lee Reynolds painting
We have an oil painting on canvas with a signature, "Lee Reynolds", in the bottom right-hand corner. The number 624 and initials that appear to be "ls" are written in the back of the painting. This still portrait depicts a vase of white, yellow, red, and orange flowers on a white tablecloth with 3 slices of watermelon and a knife. We purchased the painting about 37 yrs. ago in Hawaii. Could anyone give us some info re our painting? Thanks.

Lee Reynolds paintings
My dad was an artist for vanguard and heres the scoop people. there were alot of artist making alot of oil paintings back in the late sixties early seventies at vanguard studios! They signed it Lee Reynolds, and were well paid. Who dosen't remember the mushroom picture or the bullfighter or the racing horses in every motel, lounge, restaurant, all across the good ol US of A. If you like yours, then it's worth something, If not I've got some blacklight posters from the eighties that might do it for ya!
I have Lee Burr Sketches
I have something completely different than all of these oil and arcylic paintings that seem to be flooding the world by Lee Reynolds Burr. I have a total of 5 Sketches,4 small,1 very large black charcohl or something of the sort. The small sketches are all signed and titled and numbered and the subjects are all of little girls. The large sketch is not titled but is signed and the subject is a mother holding a baby. They are all framed in thick large silver frames and the 'vangaurd' sticker is on the back of eack picture. Does anyone else have anything similar? and does anyone have any idea of the value of these beautiful pieces of art that were all given to me?I do know the basics about Lee reynolds burr and the differences in the names he uses so i do believe i have original "lee burr"art. Thanks to all who have something to say about this.

Van Gaard painting
Bought a painting that says Van Gaard on bottom left, and on the back it has a tag that says original painting by Van Gaard. At the bottom of the tag it says all production and reproduction rights reserved, Vanguard Studios, Hollywood, California.
Also a number written in marker that says 403-w....and a capital A. It's a street scene with a horse drawn carriage. Original frame, it appears. Any thoughts about it?
I have inherited a beautiful painting with a VANGUARD STUDIOS Pacoima Ca. label on the back. The painting is of a jovialold man with white hair and beard and three small children hugging him and and one standing infront of him holding his hand. Can anyone tell me the name of this piece and or any other info. Thank you for any help!
this is what i know
Van Gaard's real name is Lee Reynolds Burr. He was the director of the Van Gaard studios in Hollywood CA starting in the late 60's. There is no artist by the name of Van Gaard. Van Gaard was the house signature for the Vanguard Studio in Beverly Hills, Calif., a factory-like operation that employed about 50 artists. These artists did piece work--about 30-40 paintings a day like the one you're offering--for which they were paid about $1.50 a painting. These were copies of Lee Reynolds' originals. The backgrounds were done in acrylics and then line-work was silkscreened from the Reynolds master. The workers detailed the screened lines and employed a glue dispenser--often referred to as drip oiling--to create the raised effects. The finished product was sprayed with an oil sealer so they could be advertised as original oils. (Reynolds himself was rarely seen on the premises.) That is how Mr Burr signed his paintings when he ran the studio. He was also known for putting his signature on his students artwork. This unique painting portrays a proud Matador standing along side his prize. The painting is accented with the original frame that was framed by the VAN GAARD STUDIOS, Beverly Hills Ca. The coloring of the greens and yellows along with a hint of burnt orange really stand out with the black Matadors suit, and not to mention the bull.

Thoughts on Lee Reynolds
Here is what I think from reading these posts and the pamplet attached to the back of my own "Lee Reynolds" painting -- There are literally thousands of paintings signed "Lee Reynolds" floating around out there in the world. The vast majority were NOT painted by the real Lee Reynolds Burr, but painted by the students at Vanguard Studios using Lee's techniques. I think Vangauard was in the business of supplying "sofa" paintings to furniture stores and possibly hotels and department stores and making a nice profit doing it. These paintings are not worth much -- maybe $20 - $250 (see ebay auctions) -- there are just too many of them and no way to determine WHO really painted them for them to have much value. One posting by a studio artist at Vanguard says he could paint up to 40 paintings a day! So the value is in the eye of the beholder -- if you like it -- keep it -- if not, donate it to the local Salvation Army. Now, if you have a painting signed Lee Reynolds Burr or Lee Burr -- THEN you might have the real thing, and none of the above applies. Just my thoughts -- for what they are worth.
Lee Reynolds - Information
I have more information about Lee Reynolds & enjoy posting it as most entries on this board only pose questions (left unanswered?). I tried to find information about a painting of mushrooms for a non-profit on-line auction site. I was mostly unsuccessful & the painting deemed worthless; it ended up being priced at $25, sent to retail. Today I came across TWO MORE large (over 40 X 40") paintings on canvass CLEARLY signed Lee Reynolds at a thrift store. One of boats on white was priced at $40.00. The back was stamped on the wooden frame Vanguard Studios 1967. The other painting was of tulips in pastel colors, priced at $125.00. It was not stamped but had a tag from JCPenny pricing it at $268.00. The best comment I can forward at this time is to submit that this Lee Reynolds has generated a mess.
Lee Reynolds Burr
Am interested in finding a book with Mr. Burr's art work in it. I have one of his large oil paintings and would like to know when it was done and where it has been until about 20+ years ago when my husband acquired it.
Thank you, Lorraine

I have a picture signed by Lee Reynolds that my mother bought years ago and gave it to me. It is a picture of a old house located in a field on a dreary day in winter. Tree's are mirrored in mud old in the long dirt drive. Does anyone have any information on this picture?
Lee Reynolds is...
Lee Reynolds is an artist who taught for Vanguard studio in California. He allowed his students to sign his name on their paintings as well so it's possible to have one from a student and not him. His original signature can be found on a famous painting of his called the bullfighter series. If you can look it up to compare signatures. I have one of his paintings and have researched him for years. Not much else about him other than he is living in Cal. with wife and kids. His style is unique and his signature is easy to spot once you know it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Does anyone from Vanguard or other vested party ever monitor this discussion board? I have noticed that there have been many questions regarding Vanguard studio paintings and particularly Lee Reynolds work. However, no one seems to respond back to any questions. I believe that what a lot of us are looking for is how to find the value of our paintings and other information pertaining to Lee Reynolds. To me, it seems that this web site is only set up to create an income stream with no one from the studios responding to requests. Where can we go to view additional works? How can we find the values of our paintings. How can we gather additional information? Any help would be appreciated by all.

City Scape - Lee Reynolds
My wife & I purchased a large almost square(5'X 6')
painting. it is an abstract of a city done is large strokes of yellow (background) and black (buildings) and white(5large round circles of what look like street lights in the foreground) We have loved it since we purchased it in 1971 at a furniture store in Cedar Rapids Iowa. We have always wondered about the painting and the artist. We have heard that Lee Reynolds (Burr) was an art teacher-artist that had many students painting and he would sign as Lee Reynolds. We would love to hear from anyone with information on Mr. Burr and also from anyone who might be familiar with the work that we own. If you have information please reply. Thank you...

In the lower left it is signed Reynolds and on the back of the canvas is the #568 in black with a TF written underneath that. It makes no mention of Vanguard studios on it. It was left in our office and the owner just gave it to me.
I worked at Vanguard studios as a painter in the early 70's. It was a great place to work.
The 24x48 spanish galleons were called glue paintings and we made $1.50 ea from them piece work. But I could do 35-40 in a single day so it was pretty good pay for those days when the min wages were $3.15 an hour. For the large Hi Line 40x60 paintings we were paid $5.00ea. And that was good money too cause if you worked fast you could do 10 or 12 a day.

Lee Reynolds was born in Los Angeles in 1936. He attended the local schools and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree on Fine Art at the University of Southern California. His is a purely personal technique, reflecting an eclectic taste. Recent Triumphs include the famous bullfighter series. From what I have found out,,,, Lee Reynolds signed his earlier paintings , the ones that he painted himself, he signed them Lee Reynolds, When his students started painting them , they also signed them Lee Reynolds , but the signature was accompanied by a Vanguard Studios stamp on the back, the ones that he painted himself after the students stopped painting were signed Lee Reynolds Burr. So from what I gather if , it doesnt have the Vanguard stamp on it, it is probably original. I would love to know the value of mine!!!

This signature on a piece indicates a staff artist from Vanguard Studios, California's famous art workshop.Vanguard artists are trained at America's finest art schools but also have successfully competed with others with equally impressive backgrounds to achieve their coveted positions as members of the Vanguard staff. Lee Reynolds Burr, Vanguard Art Director, permits the signature "Lee Reynolds" to be affixed to the best of the works conceived and executed at Vanguard Studios. Mr. Burr was graduated from the University of Southern California. His eclectic taste resulted in the now famous Bullfighter series. In addition, his theme adaptations on a sries entitled, "The World's Children" was met with marked acclaim in 1971. His paintings and prints hang in many important collections and innumerable museums. He lives in Beverly Hills, California, with his wife and two children.
I have found a website for Lee Reynolds and they have a lot of Lee's artwork posted. Additionally, it's rumored that students signed their artwork under this name, I don't know which school this happened at thought?
I too have a large painting of the prancing horses. My mom was going to get rid of it, but I have always loved it. The first time I saw it was on The I Dream of Jennie show. It hung in Major Nelson's wall(it moved from place to place. Just thought it was a fun fact to share. Thanks,Dianne
Did Mr. Lee Burr's ever lived in New York during 1980?
I have a painting that is signed Lee Reynolds, does that mean that he did not paint this?? Since he is signing his work as Lee Burr? I was just wondering if it was painted by one of his students or by him.
Lee Reynolds Burr
Artist who signed Lee Reynolds
As you might know, many students painted with the name Lee Reynolds. We are trying to find anyone who worked at Vanguard Studios to help different collectors try and figure out which artist painted what. If any artist for Vanguard Studios at that time reads this, please get in touch with us so we can perhaps catalog which painting was done by whom.
His website is not up yet but we are planning on it sometime this summer. Meanwhile I have a few of his painting on my site.
