Any info on Joseph Payton?
I have recently purchased a painting of a shepherd boy with two goats in the background, done in a very romantic, old style. The frame appears to be the original and also appears to be pretty old. I can't see a signature on the painting (it is very dark from old lacquer) but the frame has the name Joseph Payton printed on the gilt, just below the painting. The back of the wood stretcher has "Payton" written across it. Would anyone know whether I should assume this painting is actually by Payton? Was he well enough known to have been copied? It is certainly not a modern copy. My reasons for doubt are the name printed on the frame rather than a signature on the painting and the fact that this is an oil on canvas, when all of the paintings I see attributed to Payton online are oil on board. Thank you.
