Donna & I bought Waterfront in 1967 on our honeymoon from Michigan. It is such a peaceful, longing painting that it still hangs near our bed in Arizona. It is so sad that Mr. Stilson was traveling with money and was found dead of a gunshot to the head (remembrances of Hemingway come to mind). We are back in Cape Cod for a vacation and will travel to Bearskin Neck in homage to that great artist. RIP.
Renowned Artist found
News article I found, told of finding Bill Stilson's body in PA. in Jan. 2013. I met Bill at his Gallery in Rockport and purchased 2 of his prints. I loved his charcoal prints. He Personally framed them for me in the 1970's and I still have them hanging on the wall. I always wondered what ever happened to him and saddened that he passed the way he did.
have veryt large oil of ballerina worming up
My brother inlaw helped clean at a jewish temple in Minneapolis, mn. this was in early 1970's, for his help he was paid and given this painting of ballerina sighned Stillson. If any one has any ideas on a value. or of a collecter to contact. thanks
My husband and I live in the North Shore area. I had bought the first original oil painting from Bill in the early 70's, as a gift to my husband. Both of us knew Bill and Nora (his second wife), and we purchased many of his original oil paintings and became friends throughout the years. Time passed, and during our next visit to Bill's gallery, we found it closed and could not find Bill; we went to a real estate agent friend of ours, and to the Rockport Art Gallery to try and find him. We were told that there was a legal situation involving his wife and that he planned to sell the Gallery, which did happen. In the late 90's, we received a call from Bill, who came to my place of business and asked me to help him with documentation regarding his legal case, as he was having problems producing them, and we did help him. We took him out to dinner, and saw him several times. He said he was living in Rockport, his border was a Swedish lady, and it was a temporary situation. He came to our house a few times, and spent Christmas with us. He told us that he planned to go visit his sister in Las Vegas, Nevada. We asked him to keep in touch with us, however, we never heard from him again, in spite of trying to locate him! If ANYONE KNOWS the TRUE DETAILS about what happened to Bill, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET US KNOW!
woman brushing her hair
Bought it in '66. Still love it. Just wondering about the artist after all these years.
print by stilson, possibly the 1965 "Waterfront"
I am trying to determine the value of a print that was gifted to me. It was purchased from the Belgard Gallery in Rockport, MA
Since I am unfamilar with his work I believe it is the Waterfront referred to on this discussion board. It has a few buildings with a sailboat in the foreground, muted blues and graytones and ivory sky. It has the signature in the lower left corner w/copywright 1965
Please inform! Thank You
he was my mothers brother, and mt uncle.
my sister and i are his only family alive i believe. want to know what happened to him
Looking for biographical information.
Update Bill Stilson
I think we all need to find out once and for all if Bill is dead or alive. If dead - what exactly did happen - when and where???? It sounds to me like the second wife (I being Brooke from 1960's) knows that he did indeed kill himself. I guess she still lives in Gloucester, Mass. I do not think there was any brain tumor. He did suffer from depression. He told me, as I had not seen him for many years, but dug him up in Ft. Lauderdale and pursuaded him to return to Rockport from Florida and sell the building in 1997-98-99. He appreciated it that I encouraged him to get off his a--- and get back up to Rockport. He came out to see the old church I bought in 99 in Fall River, Mass. and brought me a print I posed for. He told me (after he had taken me out to lunch) that when he walked out that door I would never see him again. He told me that he was going to take the money from the sale of the building and travel and that when the money ran out he would kill himself.
Rosewood house Painting
My wife and I married in Rockport thirty years ago and had visited Bill's studio several times. We finally were able to afford one of his paintings and it just happened to be the one we also loved. The Rosewood House still holds a place of honor over our fireplace mantle. Thank you Mr. Stilson for being a treasured part of our household of all these years.
Bill Stilson 1963
I Just purchased a beautiful large signed painting Stilson 1963 of a girl with a cello. I was wondering if there are many more of his paintings anywhere. We just love his style.
I must have met Brooke Taney Stilson in June of 1972 when I wandered into their gallery and for the first time in my life really fell in love with art. I purchased a print entitled "Brooke II" of a nude girl brushing her hair in front of a mirror and another print of the Rockport Harbor that looked as if it had been painted over burlap. I also purchased a framed oil of a sunrise or sunset over a swamp that has amazing color that almost jumps off the canvas when you turn off the light attached to the frame. I still treasure all three pieces and the first and third hang in my bedroom today. If Bill is gone, I'm very sorry, and I thank Brooke for encouraging my interest. She was a very good salesperson and I had no idea I was speaking with the model for the print I was buying!
I knew Bill while I lived in the Boston area in the mid 70's. He came to the airport for instruction and was a student of mine. We became friends and I purchased an oil and a copy of Reflections, which is still hanging in our bath. I have searched for him in the past to no avail. I do know he crashed the Bellanca tri tail he owned but survived the crash as it wasn't a serious indecent as I recall. I was in my 20's back then and am now 60 so he would be getting on if he is still alive. Bill was a very interesting fellow. I do know that some of the large art foundations, private collectors in the Boston area, had been purchasing quite a bit of his work for several years. There may be some way to look into that to see if anyone know of his whereabouts or perhaps the value of his oils. I seem to recall the Lodge foundation may have been one of the collectors but I can't say for sure.
bill stilson painting - reflections
I beleive Reflections was purachased by a doctor in Canada. I wanted to buy it but it was wraped and ready to ship by the time i could raise the $300. This would have been around 1966??
I will be saddened to know if Bill Stilson has passed away. I have always loved his work and visited his gallery in Rockport,Ma whenever I could. I met him there in 1984 and found him to be a very fascinating man! If I recall correctly, Rockport was his summer home and at the time he was spending winters in Williamsburg, Va. In answer to the person asking about "Reflection" Bill owned the original, but that was over 20 yrs ago.It
could be anywhere now.

My wife and I bought a signed print in the late 60's or early 70's. When I told my father about the purchase, he laughed because he had delivered Bill as a baby. Bill had broken contact with his family who didn't know he was in Rockport according to my dad. We still love our Stilson after all these years.
"Reflection" by William Stilson
I recently purchased a lithograph entitled "Reflection" by William Stilson. The subject is of a nude girl brushing her hair in front of a mirror. I was very struck by the quality of the work. Does anyone know of this work and the whereabouts of the original?
BILL STILSON WHEREABOUTS
I have been looking for years on the net for him. We own 2 oils bought in Rockport many years ago. Still love them, and would like to see more, and find him. Hope what I read here about his death is not true. Does anyone really know? I happen to think he is an excellent painter, and too bad his works are not worth a lot today. Hopefully someone will answer this.......
My parents were friendly with Bill many years ago in Rockport, Massachusetts. Both my parents and I have several paintings and prints that he did. Some we bought from him and some were given to us as gifts. I am sure they would love to know where Bill is and if he is still painting. Can he be reached? I see the previous postings that he may have passed away but have not seen any notice to that effect...Please advise.

William Stilson/his whereabouts
I was the first (wife) and the model for many of your paintings/prints, and met many of you at the Rockport Gallery. I have become an artist of merit myself. I looked up Bill after many years in 1997/98/99, and saw him briefly. I was concerned as he was suffering from depression and living in Fla. neglecting the sale of his gallery at 5 Dock Square, Rockport,so I got him to come back and sell, etc. HAS HE TAKEN HIS LIFE? I DID NOT KNOW OF ANY BRAIN TUMOR. THERE WAS A HEART PROBLEM AND SURGERY? I think Harry who had Global Enterprises up northern Main Street has given him a place to stay recently-but how to find Harry??? Please contact me with any recent news. Today is 4/20/08. I have a Studio in Fall River, Mass. in an old church I bought in 1999, Bill came to visit me here briefly after he sold the building in Rockport.
I purchased an oil painting from the artist at a street fair in Greenwich Village in 1963 and a 1965 letter from Bill Stilson where he said the painting I bought, the cat, was a favorite of his.
I have a pencil etching with the following:
ed/10 /Ballet /Stilson at the bottom of the picture. Does anyone know anything about this picture etching? Please post reply. Thank you.
I also have a very large oil painting of The Guitar with Stilson signature and 06-19-65 underneath. The only thing - the signature and dating is on the left hand side of the picture - not signed on the right as the picture shows on the internet. Please let me have your thoughts on this.
Thanks - and reply on Discussion Board for Bill Stilson.
I am sorry to report that I have been told that Bill Stilson is no longer with us as he took his own life. I personally know his ex-wife and feel the information to be accurate, although I can not guarantee it. I myself have a Stilson piece that I am trying to find more information on, so anyone with more knowledge of his paintings, please contact me.

Oil painting of Bill Stilson
I have a Stilson bought from a friend hat pased away about 15 years ago is an oil in a board about 24[*]36 is a mother embracing his son beautifully painted .I will like more information about this artist.
We have 2 of Stilsons paintings and a print of a nude woman. His wife at the time, sold the paintings at the Gallery. Any research I have done indicates his ex-wife lives in the Boston area. There is a Bill Stilson in Ft. Lauderdale area but I have not found any places that sell his work.
I purchased a Stilson when he was in Rockport back in the 70's " Moon Rays" and would love to find him again. Any idea of his wherabouts?
I purchased a Stilson painting in 1985 at his gallery in Rockport, MA. My wife and I first discovered Stilson in the late 1970’s. We were intrigued with his style and considered buying one of his paintings. We ended up not buying and always regretted it. In 1985 I was on a business trip in Boston and went to Rockport to visit his gallery. I did purchase this time, at a price that was 4X higher than in the 70’s. In the early 90’s I was back in Rockport and the gallery was vacant.
Several times I’ve tried to locate Stilson, but have been unsuccessful.
The painting I have is titled “Sailing Fantasy” and shows a house on the shore or beach with a dock in the foreground and a one masted sailboat to the right. A full moon/sun is very prominent in his works. The piece is painted in dark shades of purples and blues. Most of his works on display in the gallery at that time were done in these color tones.
We have a nude print no title. Any ideas how to find the title and value.
I don't know of any contact info for him but I am owner of a print by him titled Waterfront that was copyright in 1965. Do you know of the value of any of his prints? Thanks
