How do I know if I have an original oil painting or a copy? Does anyone know the history of this painting?
Boy with Still Life No 632
I have what I believe is an original Roesen Painting. On the Back of the Painting embossed in the Matt, is: "Boy With Still Life By Roesen
Size 16 x 20 No 632, International Gallery Prints"
Please share what you know about this painting.
I have a porcelain urn with a rural scene painted on it. It is blue in color surrounding the scene and is 12 inches high (counting the lid and handle) as well as 12" in diameter at its widest point. However, there is a mark on the bottom which should enable me to identify it, but I have had little success. The mark is a shield with a black horse in a "rearing" position. Above it is the word SEVERIN. There are also two other marks incised into the clay--VN, I believe. Finally there is a mark which is difficult to decipher--it appears to be a staff with numerous lines running above it and down the staff. I find it difficult to believe Severin Roesen would have printed his first name above the shield; however, I am relatively unfamiliar with the production of porcelain by perhaps student painters and porcelain manufacturers in the mid-nineteenth century. Can anyone give me some insight into the possibility this is an early porcelain piece painted by Roesen?
