Thomas A. Harrison Biography Thomas Alexander Harrison was born in Phladelphia in1853.He studiedat the Pennsilvania Academy of Fine art before joining the United States Geodetic Survey in 1872.He spent six years charting the East and West coasts.In 1877 he left Seattle,Washington to begin his stidies in San Francisco. Like so many of his contemporaries Childe Hassam,Th.Butler,Marry Cassat who where fascinated by the French art and culture,Harrison traveled to France in 1879 and settled in Paris where he studied with great French master Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.He also studied with Bastien-Lepage. Harrison exhibited in the Paris Salon as he embraised the impressionist movement that was revolutionizing the French art and he became well known for his seascapes and beach scenes with children and over the next two decades he achieved critical and popular success and established himself as one of the leading painters of the American expatriates. At the time of his death in 1930 Harrison was called ,, dean of American painters in Paris,, by the New York Times. Harrison Paintings can be found in many Museums amongst others Art institute of Chicago,CorcoranGallery.of Washington,Metropolitan Museum,Musee D,Orsay Paris,Royal Gallery Dresden.
