Peonies Dudley Murphy
I just purchased from resale shop a large framed peonies. 9 peonies all together with a couple of pink peonies and the rest are white. Corner is signed Dudley Murphy with a circle-emblem? above his name. The frame looks original to me and has a pencil marking #268 White Peonies. Smith Herman (in pencil also) I cannot decipher if a print or what, it's behing a glass. Peonies are in a dark (almost blackish brown or bronze) metal urn vase with claw feet. There lots of two toned green leaves at the background. Please shed some light with your expertise. If you have any questions or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me. Many thanks, Isabel
I recently purchased a Hermann Dudley Murphy painting from his Paris years that is a complete departure from what I know of his work. It is a religious scene with Christ at the center, painted in muted browns greens and reds. It has an inscription to Sandor L. Landeau in the corner. Landeau was a fellow pupil in Laurens' studio and a painter of religious subjects. The Murphy painting reminded me of the work of Henry O. Tanner, a friend and colleague of Murphy's and another artist who favored religious subjects. If anyone knows of other Murphy paintings with a religious theme, I would love to hear about them.
