Resting, by Mathias J. Alten
Does anyone have a picture (or know where I can find one online) of Alten's "Resting", 1934, 32" x 42"? A colleague of mine has a portion of this pic (a man resting under a beautiful tree) displayed on a bookmark she purchased at the Grand Rapids Art Museum years ago, and I'd love to see the entire scape. I thought the picture was donated to the Museum in 1982 (by Anna F. McCauley), but I don't believe it's still on display there.

Does anyone know if Mr. Alten painted stage backdrops? Also, was he ever known for putting churches in his work?
We have two backdrops, believed painted locally and are trying to find out who the artist is.

Hello,
I am writing a catalogue raisonne on the known paintings by Mathias J. Alten (1871-1938) I have 1550 paintings photographed and entered thus far. I welcome submissions of images for inclusion. Please cite the medium, where signed,size, titled and dated, if so. Also information about any labels or writing on the stretcher or frame. I only identify the owner as "private collection." I do not buy, sell or appraise these paintings.
