ROMERE BEARDEN
I WORKED FOR THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF WELFARE IN 1965-66. THE OFFICE WAS KNOWN AS THE NON RESIDENT WELFARE CENTER, AND WAS SITUATED ON EAST 67TH STREET IN MANHATTEN. MY "CLIENTS" AS THEY WERE CALLED WERE IN SPANISH HARLEM, BUT ROMIE WHO SAT NEXT TO ME, AND HIS PARTNER LEONARD LUTZKER WORKED IN BROOKLYN WITH GYPSIES. THEY ALWAYS HAD FABULOUS STORIES ABOUT HOW THE GYPSIES WOULD LOAN THIER CHILDREN ONE TO ANOTHER SO THAT THEY MIGHT RECEIVE MORE MONEY. I ALSO REMEMBER THAR ROMERE HAD A VERY BEAUTIFUL WIFE CALLED NANETT, WHO APPEARED FREQUENTLY IN T.V. COMMERCIALS.
ROMIE LIVED AND WORKED IN A BUILDING ON CANAL ST. IN LOWER MANHATTEN. HIS WORK SPACE WAS AUTHORIZED BY THE FIRE DEPT. OF N.Y.C. BUT HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO LIVE IN THE STUDIO, BUT HE DID ANYWAY. HE CONSTANTLY COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BAD TREATMENT THAT HE RCEIVED FROM THE FIRE INSPECTORS. I REMEMBER THAT HE WAS CONSTANTLY DRAWING WITH A BLUE PEN OVER YELLOW PAPERS WHICH THE DEPT OF WELFARE MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL EMPLOYEES. HE WOULD DRAW AS MANY AS 100 IN A DAY. BUT ABOUT 6 OCLOCK EVERYTHING WENT TO THE GARBAGE. I WOULD FOLLOW HIM TO THE TRASH BIN AND RESCUE ALL THAT I COULD. I HAD MORE THAN 1000 DRAWINGS BUT ONE DAY HE TOLD ME THAT HIS FRIEND ADD BATES WAS ORGANIZING AN EXHIBITION AND ASKED TO BORROW THE 1000 PIECES. THAT WAS THE LAST I EVER SAW OF MY COLLECTION. HE WAS A VERY FINE ARTIST, BUT I REMEMBER HIM MORE FIR HIS SENCE OF HUMOR WHICH WAS SENSATIONAL, AND A LAUGH THAT WAS REALLY INCREDABLE.
ONE DAY I BELIEVE IT WAS A FRIDAY, LENNY ROMMIE AND I WENT DOWN TO HIS STUDIO. I WAS JUST STARTING MY CAREER AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, AND HE TOLD ME THAT HE HAD A SUPER CAT CALLED GYPO, AND INVITED ME TO TAKE SOME PHOTOS. WE GOT TO CANEL
STREET. AND SAW THAT MANY OF THE STORE FRONTS HAD CROWDS OF PEOPLE IN FRONT OF THEM. TV WAS RELATIVELY A NEW TECHNOLIGY IN THESE TIMES, AND CANAL STREET WAS A RETAIL CENTER OF ELECTRONIC GEAR. ROMERE PAILED AND BEGAN TO TREMBLE.. "THIS IS BAD, THIS IS REALLY BAD." I HAD NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, BUT HE COMMENTED THAT IT WAS LIKE THIS WHEN BY RADIO THE SEGUNDO GUERRA MUNDIAL WAS BEING ANNOUNCED. WELL HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THINGS BEING VERY BAD. JOHN F KENNEDY HAD JUST BEEN ASSASINATED IN DALLAS
