Charles Marion Russell painting
I have a watercolor by Charlie Russell dated 1906 with the skull. On 4/22/13, Antiques Roadshow had a guy who brought in a two-sided graphite drawing that was incomplete on the one side, from 1888, that was appraised @ $20,000. I need to know where to find a Russell scholar to authenticate my watercolor. Does anyone have any info to share?? Thank you!

Russell - to Keith
Also have a l2x20 of a name I can't find unless I tear off the back. It's of 3 cowboys in a wild roping of horned steers - I can find nothing on it but the signage, skull etc. all there. I would advise however don't mess with it yourself. Please reply.

C. M. Russell
I just acquired a 12"X20" piece of wood with C. M. Russell's "A Doubtful Visitor" on it. I assume it is a print that has been attached to the wood. Some of it is wrinkling off of the wood. Does anyone know how to repair that? Also, does it have any value besides my affection for it?

Trying to determine artist
I inherited what I assume is a water color of what appears to be of an unknown calvryman seated at a table with a bottle of wine, smoking a cigarette. The uniform is all red with white cuffs/collar & buttonline. The eppalets appear to be white. Hes wearing boots with knee high shin guards. The signature is a circle with two C's, the first in reverse and the second regular, with a dot inbetween, from a distance it looks like an X or a fancy H. Also the painting date is 1900. My husbands great uncle was a general who owned. I would really like to know anymore info on this artist. Thank you.

Charles Marion Russell Watercolor
I have a watercolor titled "Where ignorance is bliss" dated 1907. Signed CMR with the skull. It measures 10" by 6". The frame is wood and the back has glued brown paper on the back. I do not see any copyright markings on it. It is a cartoon of a cowboy lying on a blanket with his hat tipped over his head. A bear is at his side sitting and drinking a beer and his horse is running away from the camp. I can't find a watercolor like it and it is a totally different picture than the "where ignorance is bliss" that I do find

CM Russell Wagon Boss Painting
I have the subject painting with CM Russell, the skull, 1909, and the copyright mark in the bottom left corner. It is approximately 36 X 23 in size. I acquired the painting in a auction connected to a memorial golf tournment that I go to in Broadus, MT. The painting was donated to the auction by the Montana Bar & Cafe, in Broadus, and by the looks of the frame the picture must have been in the bar for a long time. Interested in the value of the painting.

I inherited an old Russell print from my grandfather (30 yrs ago).
It is a picture of a cowboy after having been in a fight with a grizzly. Another cowboy on horseback, has just ridden up and shot the grizzly, which is laying at the feet of the recently mauled cowboy. I have looked on every Russell website on the net and can not find this print. It might be called "the end of the hunt" but I am not sure. I would be happy to receive any information about this print. It is dated 1915.

C M Russel, 'Bronc in Cow Camp' print
It is a picture of a bronc & cowboy in front of a chuck wagon. How can I tell how old the print is, and how much is it worth? I would like to list it on my insurance policy. Lower left corner, 'CM Russell' and '1890'. The paper is a little thicker, back of it is tan/yellow consistant with aging, the front surface of the paper has a texture to it, not smooth. There is a small 1/2" border, in soft green, printed on top of the edge of the print. It is in an old frame with the wavy/poured glass. No other dates or printing.

Small Indian bronze madalian
I have a small Indian bronze piece approximately 4x4 of a old man Indian with about a half inch slot in its top. It has a good smooth bronze patina to it and a polished nose caused more than like from being carried in some cowboy's back pocket. It's numbered 18/35 on its edge and just has initials of CMR on the back. There is no buffalo skull or date or foundry mark on it. I'd guess 35 were made of its addition and its number 18. Russell ink sketch prints
About 40 years ago, I received four Charles Russell ink sketch prints. They are not titled, and each are about 8X12. They were framed by "Stan Miller's HOUSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY, 6th and Quincy" in Rapid City, So. Dakota, on January 9, 1967. (Stamped on back) The background is a dark tan, and not cheap paper. The frames are black-painted wood. Wire hanger on the back of each. I don't know much about them. Anyone? Feel free to contact me. Thanks!

Cm Russell
I bought a CM Russell print in the original matting and frame. On the back is the Union 76 logo with the name of the painting called Inovation to the Sun and a description of what the indians are doing. Also on the front it is signed To Jannette Kunst from CM Russell wiht the stearhead and 1922. Just curious if you know why it is "TO" someone and who that someone is or who she was to Mr. Russell. Is it worth more then the $20 I paid for it?

Robert E. Jewell

"Lost" Charlie Russell Drawing
I'm looking for a very special pencil drawing done by Charlie for my dad when my dad was just a kid.

What makes this drawing special is that it was DONE ON THE BACK OF one of my dad's grade-school Thanksgiving art assignments.

[[][*]][[][*]][[][*]] This particular drawing of Charlie was of INDIANS WAVING A GREETING TO SAILORS ABOARD A SHIP. ...and was a casual lesson/response to my dad's drawing of the same Indian-European meeting.

My dad was a young friend of Charlie's (Charlie used to sit in the seating section reserved for the engineer's family ...my granddad was the engineer). My dad was himself drawn to art while sitting on Charlie's lap as Charlie drew during the ride. Dad subsequently took his own childhood art to Charlie for a critique. Charlie gladly obliged and always wove a story in with his critique.

Thus this Russell drawing was born. Most likely, the current owner of this original Russell drawing has no idea that the "real original" is young boy's drawing hidden on the backside of Charlie's drawing.

I am a fairly beat up Vietnam War infantryman (disabled) who would be hugely grateful to be able to see this drawing before I die. Can anyone out there please help me find this special Russell/young boy collaboration?

Sincerely

Former Infantry Sgt. Robert E. Jewell

The Joy of Life with the revealing teepee flap...
We recently came across this copy of the bawdy Russell piece, that my uncle bought when I was 12 and we were on a trip in Montana. The seller made us swear we weren't locals before he would sell it to us.

He told us that Charlie's wife Nancy had destroyed almost every painting of his like this, but this one had been hidden in the Mint or the Silver Dollar Bar in Great Falls and survived.

We'd like to have it appraised, if someone can direct us to a good appraiser of Russell's work.

Thanks!

Non-Western Russell illustration?
I know CM Russell was a prolific illustrator, but does anyone know if he ever did anyting other than Western / cowboy themes? I have a painting (not his typical signature with the skull, but similarities in lettering style) signed by Charles Russell, but it is a whimsical fishing scene, with the hooked fish in the foreground, the boat far behind, mountains in the background. It's a quality illustration, but I can't locate any other illustrators by the same name. Any clues? Thanks!

C M Russell "I rode him"
Like Sylvia Macdonald, I also acquired a water colored print at a local thrift shop years ago, entitled "I rode him". It's signed CMR, and under Russell's initials, it has a drawing that looks like a steer skull. My print also has as follows: From the brush of C.M. Russell, the Famous Cowboy Artist - - Compliments of B.P.O.E. No 214 Great Falls Montana. a few years back I believe I called the Charles M. Russell museum in Great Falls Montana, who referred me to another museum (forgot the name), but I was asked about the dots in the picture, which are almost non-existant in my print; and the gentleman I talkedd to was able to date the print of "I rode him" to 1904. The size of my print in the original frame is 12" x 16. I was told that the value of my pring was around $200-250.

Zoppo Foundry bronzes.
I have two bronzes, Snake Priest and Last Laugh, stamped B. Zoppo Foundry New York. I'd like to think they are authentic, but they seem to be a bit smaller than the measurements given in the Rick Stewart book, "Charles M. Russell Sculptor".

CM Russell Print or painting
My auntie passed away a few years ago and left me some items. I just recently found that one of the items is a painting signed by cm russell. I could not make out the name when i first saw the painting and thought it said CN Passell. My problem is I cant tell if it is a Painting or print. The frame is very old and the painting looks blueish. I felt the canvas and it has raised paint on it. Did they do this to old prints?

Thanks

"I Rode Him
I have a C.M. Russell picture that I believe might be an original sketch or perhaps a water colour. It has a picture in the forefront of a cowboy standing without a hat and around his waist is a sash that trails to the ground. In the background (but still quite large) is a goat with a saddle on it and a cowboy hat is at its left hind hoof. It is signed in original hand writing as follows:
I rode him-your Dad;
To - Craig
Herb Jackson
Ray (or Reg)Jackson
E.E. Maining
Dick Milford, Calgary Stampeders
There is also another signature that I cannot make out.
In smaller print in capital letters at the very bottom of the picture it says:
1st line:FROM THE BRUSH OF C.M. RUSSELL, THE FAMOUS COWBOY ARTIST
2nd line: COMPLIMENTS OF B.P.O.E. NO. 214, GREAT FALLS, MONTANA

If anyone knows anything about this picture I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you so very much.

answer to Kenneth Klimpel
Dear Kenneth- I have 2 of cast bronze grizzley bears. They have a hump on the back of their neck. I have been searching the web for over 3hrs. Yours is the first mention of Russell bears I have found. I took mine to an antique store today. There were signed C. Russellalong the bottom of their back leg. They are in a sitting pose. The dealer thought they looked real, but admitted he was not an expert on the subject. They are sitting on small marble circles, very dark with light streaks in it. He was certain that the marble was old. I did find a place called
Bronze Gallery on the web which makes reproductions, but they started out in 1999. They also come with a small gold colored metal plaque
on the marble, which mine do not have. I purchased mine, I have 2, at an estate auction in 1981. I would really like to know thrie worth and when they were made. I will keep looking. They are small, about 3" highand the marble circle is about that in diameter. If yours are like mine, please email anything you may find out. It would be much appreciated. Sincerely,

Charles M. Russell
Determining authentic bronze CMR Sculptures - if it is mounted on a marble base, it is almost certainly a recast. Examples of popular recasts can be found online.
Charlie's wife was Nancy Cooper Russell (1878 - 1940), NOT a Native American, and they were married Sept 9, 1896. Nancy was only 17 when she met CMR in 1895.
MANY of Russell's original paintings were made available as fine quality prints on canvas and then overlaid with gesso to simulate brushstrokes. Small dots are the giveaway to these works and a jeweler's loupe of 10x will show these lithography marks quite well. Because of the popularity of Russell's work, it has been widely copied and reproduced worldwide.

The Roundup, CM Russell, 1913
I acquired this art work 1970. When did prints start being printed on canvas? I'd like to know if my art work in print or original and whether or not to put it under glass in frame. Thanks

Trapper on horseback encounter with cougar
I recently returned from a trip to England with a sculpture (bronze)and I have been unable to find anything like it on the internet. It is approximately 12 inches tall. The trapper or mountain man is riding a horse that has read up on his hind legs, with rifle in one hand over his head, while a snarling cougar has one front paw on the trappers foot. It is signed Russell with the skull of a steer or buffalo next to his name. If anyone knows anything about this piece please contact me.

C. Russell Question
WE have a litho (T.C.M. Co) on right of a litho by C. Russel but the signature is a skull with 1898 (we think). Entitled The Buffalo Hunt but it does not look like The Buffalo hunt from 1919 I see on the internet. There is no Buffalo running down the hill. It is difficult to see but the skull and date SEEM to be in pencil ?? (this is framed with glass). Could this be a signed litho? I cannot find another picture exactly like this anywhere on the internet by him.. is it rare? It has 2 native americans on horseback on right running, buffalo in center with a calf in the lead almost and 3 native americans on right running. Anything anyone can tell us is greatly appreciated.

Russell Painting
My wife's father (long dead) went to Great Falls in the sixties and bought an original (so we thought) Russell painting. Tim Gordon (an appraiser) says look for dots and if so then it is a print. I looked and I did see what looked like dots (God, I'm such a rookie at this art thing). The painting depicts the four Georgians discovery of Gold in Last Chance Gulch,Helena Montana. My wife is a Helena native. If it is a print, then its a good one. There is no printer signature or anything. Isn't that illegal??? A person can make a print of an artwork without saying somewhere that it is not an original. Wow, I am so confused over all this----can anyone help me---HELP HELP---GEEEEEZE

Need help to date
I bought an oldish charles Russell " the texas Steer"
There is no foundry mark on it but it has the usual russell initials and steer head. It is mounted on a very heavy green marble base, which I removed to see if there were any marks. The brass old plate on the base says simply "By Russell" I have a hunch this was done or sold in NYC around the late 60's or early 70's. Does anyone recognize that kind of base and who sold it. Both Tiffanys and some man whose name started with H did castings about that time. It clearly is not new and just as clearly is not marked with a foundry mark Help. Thanks.

Need help identifying mystery painting
Hello – I recently aquired a very old oil painting from a liquidation auction at a company in Dallas, Texas. The painting was in a crate in storage and is damaged, but has no signature or writing anywhere on the painting or frame. Someone on another website suggested that it may be a portrait of Charles II.

Can anyone provide me with any clues? ie, time period, artist, subject matter, etc. This is my first piece of art to buy and I know nothing about paintings... thanks!

Russell Appraisal
I am an appraiser in Montana who is an expert with paintings by Russell and others. I receive upwards of 50 inquiries per year regqarding Russell "paintings", which turn out to be prints. One quick way to tell, is to use a magnifying glass and look for dot patterns. The best of his prints, value wise are Ridgley Calendar Co. printed. Ridgley was a freind of Russells and these are earliest.

Russell Bronze
I have what I believe to be an old Russell Bronze. Height 11-1/4 inches, 5X8-7/8 inches, Signed CM Russell (skull) too. It also has a very small RBW for the bronze works stamp initials in the very front, very bottom, very small, also very bottom very back too.

The bronze is Will Rogers and is number 43 pictured on page 78 in the book Charles M. Russell by Frederic G. Renner.

I bought it many years ago for $1,495.00 at a very reputable gallery.

I would like to know, is this the real deal?

What is it really worth today?

Thanks
