Question about Cosgrave
I have a first edition of "Come In" by Robert Frost illustrated by Cosgrave. It is signed in the front with a dedication to my mother by J.O.H. Cosgrave II in Reno, Nevada, 1943. My mother was a student of Dole Reed (aquatints) who was part of the Taos scene. Do you know if there is any connection bewteen Reed and Cosgrave?

My Earliest Memory... THE SOVERIGN OF THE SEAS
My earliest childhood memory is of the painting THE SOVERIGN OF THE SEAS hanging in my Dad's study. When my parents moved to their new house, they called all 7 kids to come home and "get their stuff!". I was the last to return home, so other than what was mine, any remaining odds and ends were in boxes destined for a garage sale. As I passed by I saw the painting sticking out of a box. I asked, and was given THE SOVERIGN OF THE SEAS.

My parents are in their 80's now, and have asked us kids what of theirs we would like after they are gone.... Long story short, I already have the best part of them in my heart... and the next best part is now hanging on my wall, in my study.

I wouldn't sell it for all the money in China. Thanks Mr. Cosgrave, for creating such a wonderful memory.....

Clipper Ships
I have two clipper ship paintings signed, J. O' H. Cosgrave 11. One is named Flying Cloud 1851. The other Sea Serpent, 1850.
Canvas used is a hard pressed material. Could these be original paintings?

Serpent and Challenge
Answering Mr. Herens and Ms. Green, I own two ship paintings by Cosgrave- "Challenge 1855" and "Serpent 1855". I have been searching for a few years to learn more about his work. I spoke to a man that his wife had hired to photograph his work which, he said, she donated to his former university. We believe the school was in California. That might help you find some more of his work. I also found a notice of the sale of one of his painting in Germany that was for a rather large sum. I do not know the true values of his work though. I am very fond of my ships and would not part with them anyway. Good Luck.

J.O. Cosgrave II
John O'Hara Charles Arthur O'Mally Cosgrave II is the full name of the artist who signed his work J.O. Cosgrave II. He was my father's uncle. I have 4 of his original watercolors--2 are nautical, one is a painting of his house, and the last is a New Orleans street scene. The only one of these paintings I know the title is "The Packet Ship St. Nickolas," if memory serves rightly. My father's brother has about 6 other paintings. FYI, his wife, Esta Cosgrave, was also a significant artist in her own right. Her works illustrated an edition of "A Rabble in Arms," among other things. I have 3 of her works as well. All are ancestor portraits.
