Edmund Osthaus Print
I have an old print in a beat up frame. we took the picture out of the frame and it has a message on the inside of the cardboard that supported the picture. Christmas "1943" from Ralph.
It is two black and white pointer type dogs, not sure of the bread. They are chasing some thing across a wooded area. Their noses are pointing to right.
Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Does any one know the title for the picture of the mother and her 4 pups in a field? This is the one where the pups are pointing at a butterfly in the lower left hand corner. It is signed in the lower right.
I'm having trouble finding any information on it.
Thank you.

Edmund Osthaus
Osthaus was originally from Newaygo, Michigan. His later years were associated with the Toledo Art Museum which owns a fairly large collection, though they are only occasionally on display. There is also a men's club in Toledo (the old kind with big squishy chairs and lots of mahogany woodwork)that has many of his originals. These are mostly large oil that often are valued in the $30,000 plus range today. You may also find prints and even see him in old gun catalogues or calendars for hardware stores of the period.

A Splendid Stance
In the 70's I bought a framed print of the Edmund Osthaus painting `A Splendid Stance', which is signed and copyrighted 1910 Edm.H.Osthaus lower right hand side of the print. Paid £5 pounds! I assume that many of these prints were produced, perhaps between the 1930's to 60's. Can anyone help with more information? Does anyone know where the original painting is held and is it on show to the public? It would be really great to know more about it.

Edm. H. Osthaus
I collect bird dog prints. Several years ago in a junk store on the coast of Oregon I found two litho's by Mr. Osthaus. One a male setter named Joe Cumming, which I have learned something about. (a print is for sale on the internet) The other is Geneva, a setter bitch that has inscribed 1903 National Field Trial Champion. Anyone know anything about this print. It is very fine condition and has it's full color, I would guess. roger neil moss

Osthaus in US
In researching the life of Marie Osthaus Griffith - the sister of Edmund, I am able to add a bit of family history to his biography. Included is the fact that he arrived in the US from Dusseldorf in 1881 and left Oshkosh, Wisconsin for Toledo in May of 1886. Please see the biography on his sister.
