Clarence Braley, pastel
Some years I purchased for a few dollars a small 5" x 15 1/2" pastel in a broken frame. The frame was in pieces but the work itself was very good. I am an artist and know the difficulty in producing a pastel of this caliber. I had it reframed. It has hung in my house and I have enjoyed this scene of dark rocks and pounding surf. Today for some reason I looked at the signature which I thought originally was E Braley but on learning of Clarence Braley I looked again and decided what I thought was an E was a C. I am looking for any information on this artist.

Clarence Braley, Aritst
Braley was an artist and interior decorator among other artistic influences, pastels were a passion of his, but he had quite a range of activity from what little I could garner from written historical and biographical information. He stayed mainly on the east coast and was influenced in his work greatly there. Hios second wife lived well into the 1940's early 50's I believe, I need to update her information regarding that, she maintained a large collection of his works and they were in turn donated to a local community in which they lived I believe. I will see if I can go thru some notes I might have archived away. I have one of Braely's works, a pastel of lake scene at night with a full moon....Braley liked using pastels and light in his works and was one of the first to perfect that form as i understand. Nice to see all the recent posts on here. I bought my Braley in Kent , Washington. About as far as you can get from where it was first produced. Coast to Coast.

C. Braley pastel, Moon and Cottage
I have two pastels of a moon in a midnight blue sky over a wood. At the end of a path is a cottage with lighted windows. The wood is glowing in the moonlight and the light from the windows adds to the effect.

One of the paintings is signed, the other is unsigned and at at different perspective. The second appears to be a study of the first.

I'm taking them to the Antiques Roadshow on Saturday. We'll see if this is Clarence Braley or Charles Braley (signature looks like it says Charles...but can't be sure). I'll leave an update after the show!

Correction of previous Note on Artist Clarence Braley
I misspoke facts not correctly verfied in a note from May 2001 regarding Mr. Braley and his Birth and Death dates and locations. His father and mother are listed directly below.
Horatio A Braley
(1824 - 1904)

Sarah Seabury Johnson
(1823 - 1904)

He was married to his First Wife Rebecca as indicated:
m. 29 Jun 1882, Fairhaven:
Clarence E Braley

b. 28 Nov 1857, Freetown, Bristol, MA
d. 11 Apr 1925, New Bedford, Bristol, MA, age: 67

Born:Rebecca T Sampson
b. 7 Mar 1858, Fairhaven, Bristol, MA
d. 22 Apr 1891, New Bedford, Bristol, MA, age: 33

Second Wife:
Ellen James Burgess

newly discovered braley
I have just learned that I am the proud owner of an unknown Braley. It is a still life of watermelon, grapes and such. It hung in my Grand parents house from 1920 and in my parents home until their deaths. My grandfather bought it directly from Mr. Braley before he and my grandmother were married. My Aunt said she didn't think it was worth much and that the frame, which is the original, was most likely more valuable. My grandparents lived in North Dighton, Massachusetts from 1918 until their deaths in 1962 and 72 respectively.

Clarence E. Braley
I have found a bit more on Mr. Braley in the form of personal data as well as some commentary regarding his ability as an artist. His birth and death years are not listed correctly and I would submit that Mr. Braley was buried in KIANTONE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH CEMETERY, KIANTONE, NY in a family plot or near family members. The cemetary records list his birht and death years as follows: Braley, Clarence E. b. 1854 d. 1927 . Which is close to those which you have here but I submit that unless your data refutes and is more reliable, that this is correctly his birth and death years. Also, Mr Braley appears in a manuscript written by Mrs. Elwyn G. Campbell, entitled: Artists of This Vicinity (Part Two), submitted at the Roundabout Club in 1921 and at the Fairhaven Colonial Club in 1922 (Fairhaven, Mass.), the short passage reads as follows: "Clarence Braley does decorating of all kinds of artistic work. He also does delightful watercolor." I hope that I have submitted correct and truthful data that will shed a little more light on this little known artist. Does anyone have a complete list of his known works and the medium in which they were done??
