Oil Painting by William Hoffman ~ Horse at Creek/Village
My wife and I were at a moving/estate sale held by the daughters of their father. The father was a big California traveler in the 80's and 90's after he retired, and the daughters thought he acquired this painting at or around that time. Although it is oil on canvas, the painting looks like almost too good. It is not a print, but the canvas and oil have a very small pebble feel. The frame and condition suggest 50's to 80's. Any thoughts. I saw a print of the same paint sold through Goodwill of all places, so the a repo in oil seems likely.
Hoffman Indian Chief oil on canvas
I recently purchased this Chief, oil on canvas painting by Hoffman and I am trying to find a little more information on it. I have researched it a lot and have seen multiple native scenes but I cannot find my particular one. I'm wondering if its an original and what the value would be. Thank you for taking the time to read even if you don't have any information.

A friend pointed me toward this page and I'm surprised and touched by all the comments here.

Hi, I have a beautiful hoffman seascape that my mother in law commissioned William for when she lived in California, many years ago,at least 30 years if not more. I know that it has some value as she paid quite a bit for it back then, she loved collecting art and commissioned many local artyists from anywhere she travelled. I can not find anything with an insurance value and would love more info on the artist and the painting. My Mom in law is getting on in years and can't recall too much. She asked us to never part with it, and I plan on passing it down to my children. The painting looks like either No Cali or South. It is in a very ornate gold leaf frame (not my style but I do not want to make any changes to it). Anyhow, if anyone could give me some more history on it, I would appreciate it. I would love to give my girls some more info on it as well as making sure that I get the proper insurance value. Thank you!!
We had a cabin up from Hoffman. near Boulder Bay.
I used to play and hang out there with his sons in the late 60's.
I was in 3rd - 5th grade.
He had a big 2 story great view home on the point at the lake. I thought they were rich back then.
That is all I remember of my childhood. My dad still lives there at 81 years old.

William (Bill) Hoffman
I first met Bill around 1966 when he lived in Woodland Hills, Ca. and was working for ASCAP and painting in his spare time. I owned a camera/hi-fi business in Woodland Hills and, one day, he brought in one of his paintings which I bought on the spot!
We became friends and I acquired another 6 of his works, seascapes as well as mountain themes. Around the time he moved to Big Bear, I sold my business and retired to Montana where I met his brother who was the local county assessor at that time. We enjoyed talking about Bill when we happened to meet. Bill was born very close to my birthplace but, by chance, we met in California.
His paintings that we have are greatly admired by our friends and visitors. I was saddened to learn of his death a few years ago; we were the same age.
Bill was my neighbor in Big Bear Lake, CA. He was a full time residents there, I was a weekender.
All of the neighbors use to get together for barbecues on holidays weekends. Bill would always come and add to the festivities. He was a lot of fun. I have two of his paintings. His wife was an artist also.
