George Melville Stone
I'm Julie Myers, curator at the Mulvane Art Museum, Washburn University, Topeka. We have quite a few works by Stone. We are thinking of doing an exhibition featuring images by Stone of the European urban and rural poor. He did quite a few of these. If anyone has such works, please contact me at email@example.com

I am Melanie's second cousin once removed and am also interested in Uncle George's paintings. He did several murals, but also smaller paintings and many portraits. There is evidence of more than 350 portraits. He could paint from photographs, but would more often paint from life. His portraits are lovely and lifelike, capturing the characters of the sitters very well.
p.s. Melanie Nolker is also an artist whose work you might enjoy, as was her sister Sylvie D. Stone.
Portrait by George Stone
Have inherited a portrait of an old man, (14'x16") from my parents, who inherited it from my aunt in Topeka. She was of a prominent family there and one of the first women to graduate from Washburn law school. I graduated from Washburn (1968) and find Stone's link to the art department special as well as the portrait. Any idea of the identity of the old man? Could try to photograph it and send along if you think you could date the piece and possibly too.
Thanks, Suzanne (Chicago)
George Melvin Stone !
I own a large G M Stone painting of the Santa Barbara Mission. I think it was painted when he was out here in Cali back in 1912 or so. I believe he went on a few side trips after he was finished painting the murals at the 'Riverside Inn'. The size is appx. 24'x42", not counting the original frame. I aquired this painting back in the very early 1970's from a man in Felton Ca.
If you would like to see what it looks like email me at, firstname.lastname@example.org.
