Bill Gollings Painting: correction
On my previous entry I mis-quoted the title of the painting. It is in fact "Lone Tree."
My family is not directly associated with Sheridan, where Mr. Gollings had his studio. My dad was born in Omaha. His mother Frances was the youngest of five, including a half-sister named Ida who was quite a bit older than her. They were an established Nebraskan family.
Ida was a school teacher who never married, and was interested in art and travel. We believe she acquired the painting in her travels, or it may have been a gift to her. It may be a coincidence, but Frances was married in 1915, the year this landscape was painted. She may have received it as a wedding gift, or it may have come to her possession when Ida passed away.
When my grandmother Frances passed away in the late '60s, the painting came to our house in Michigan along with her other personal effects. My dad didn't have a personal attachment or attraction to the painting, so he put it in the attic, where it stayed for about 45 years.

My parents had to sell the family home in June of '04, and moved to senior housing. The painting came to light at that time, and I was able to keep it. Not till early this year did I realize the importance of Gollings' work, and so have been doing some research since then. Since it is a smaller painting, I assume it was one he did on horseback in northern Wyoming.
Thank you, Mr. King for your feedback.

Gollings did many landscape "studies" of which you have one. These were painted around Sheridan and in Montana just north of here on his friend's ranches. What relationship does your family have to Sheridan? Enjoy!

Bill Gollings painting
I have inherited a painting that came from my dad's family in Nebraska. It is signed Gollings and dated 1915, and has his trademark hoof print. It is a scenery subject that appears to be what northern Wyoming would have looked like in that era. The size is approx. 11" X 7", oil on canvas board. On the back is penciled as if it is a title: "Lone Pine." There are also some numbers, and my great aunt's first name in pencil. My question: has anyone following this artist's work and history ever heard of this painting? I know he liked to name his work, so it's possible it was his title for it. Any comments?
