Pete (Peter Paul) Martinez  (1894 - 1971)

Worked at his ranch in 1953
I lot of kids used to work at his ranch. I really miss those days as they mean a lot to me yet. He was very nice to kids. He had his own rodeos at the ranch. He also roped cattle at the Tucson Rodeo. I watched him paint at his ranch and got interested in it myself. I'll never forget him.

Just found a Pete Martinez
I just inherited a Pete Matinez sketch from 1936 titled "Beefsteak on the Hoof".

"To my friend Vint who I'll hope to meet many times along the Long Dim Trail."

It was apparently given to a friend of my parents who subsequently gave it to them.

It is extremely cool.

Anyone know who Vint "Gus" Bedell is?

Pete Martinez signed etching on copper
I have a small copper foil etching which has a cowboy scene on it. On the reverse of the etching is a piece of paper on which this message appears:
"Roundup, Mont. Dec 3rd, 1941
Dear nephew and neice.
Just a card that you can put in some frame so that you will have something to remember me by. This copper is from our copper mines at Butte, Montana. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year from uncle FREE. McLean."
Does anyone know anything about any of this.

Pete Martinez - Artist
I received 7 Pete Martinez pen/pencil sketches, one water color, and the July 1953 issue of HORSE LOVER'S Magazine from an elderly gentlemen in the late 1970's. Three of the sketches are of the Tucson rodeo from 1950-1952 and the others of cattle drives, etc. The magazine has Pete's "His Only Shirt" water color on the cover and a little blurb on p21 written by Pete about the subject being a story of a Kern County CA cattle ranch told to him in 1914. Pete worked as a cowboy at our family's Deep Creek Ranch near Glenwood, NM. As a child I remember Pete and did visit his studio in the early 1950's. I inherited a large oil Pete did in 1950.

My uncle Harry Batchelder was a friend of Pete's when he lived on the east cost. He gave me uncle several of his pen and inks dated 1933, 1934 & 1936. I loved looking at them in his home when I was growing up. I use to get lost in fantasy looking at those schetches and years later I now enjoy them in my own livingroom.

A little story of where Uncle Pete came from ... Uncle Pete, Uncle Art, Uncle Frank, Uncle Herman, Uncle Leo and Grandma Mary were all born near Deer Creek in the area of Porterville, CA to Josephine Vasquez belonging to a very large Vasquez family in Visalia, CA and Guy Martinez from a town near the border of CA and Mexico ... Great Grampa Martinez was hit by a rattlesnake on his thumb when reaching for his reins tied to a prairie bush in 1904 ... he died on the way to Porterville from his ranch ... picked up by folks in a wagon ... he was 3 miles from the doctor. They had a ranch where they raised almonds, cattle and Jersey cows. Grama spoke of stories and so did my Great Uncle Leo Martinez. Grama Mary died in 1994 on June 12th in Fresno, CA at the age of 105 ... her mother, Nana Josephine, passed away in 1956 at the age of 96 ... she was born in 1860.

My grandmother Mary Martinez Hathaway was Uncle Pete's only sister. We have many etchings given to us by Uncle Pete. He came to Nana's (his mom's)funeral in Sanger, CA in 1956 and I was 12 at the time. My mother, grandmother, his other brothers all talked about him. Uncle Pete was a drinking partner at the Hotel Congress to Lee Marvin. Pete was my Godfather. He was related by marriage, married to my Great-Aunt Victoria Martinez.
When I was growing up I remember watching him paint, playing in his studio, and learning a lot about cowboys, the lifestyle, and horses.
I have so many fond memories of him!

I know a little about Pete Martinez. He was a cowboy artist that spent a substantial part of his career in Tucson, AZ. Locally, his paintings are most prominently displayed in the Hotel Congress in Tucson. Supposedly some of the paintings were given to the Hotel to settle a bar tab. Mr. Martinez spent some time selling cowboy-style paintings in NJ and PA. I've seen several of his paintings for sale on E-bay. Tucson would be a good local market to sell the art. See if the Hotel Congress has a web site - it may have some of his paintings on display.

Does anybody have any information about this artist? My parents say they knew him in the 1950's when they lived in Arizona and my mother was given a painting of his. She said he was an up and coming artist. It's been hanging in her house for as long as I can remember. Just curious.
