Robert Paine, sculptor He was my grandfather. Lived in Berkeley for a period of time after working many years @ St. Gauden's studio. Best know piece w/ his imprinture is General Sherman statue in Central Park which used his "pointing machine" to scale up a small statue to a huge one. Came west in his 40's, settled in Berkeley, supervised construction of sculpture on the Palace of Fine Arts (Panama-Pacific Exhibition, 1911). Built a studio in Berkeley. Lived in Los Gatos for a period of time and sculpted "The Cats" at the base of the driveway to the estate of Col. Wood with whom he lived (in the gardener's shed). Inventor, socialist soap-box speaker (Oakland) willing to be arrested for his beliefs. All around interesting fellow.
