05/17/2001 Dr. Jeffrey Owens
New Orleans connection James C. Beard was the only Louisiana artist listed in the 1910 Who's Who in America. At that time he resided at 2413 Milan St., New Orleans, with his wife Martha Bray of Terre Haute, IN. Beard was born in Cincinnati in 1837 to James Henry & Mary Caroline Carter Beard. After a childhood spent in Covington, KY, he was admitted to the bar in 1861, but only practiced a short time. Primarily he worked as an illustrator. His childrens' books included Little Workers (1878), Curious Homes and Their Tenants (1897), & Billy Possum (1909). Beard's siblings were also noted illustrators. His sisters Adelia Belle & Lina Beard worked together on books for girls, and his brother Daniel Carter "Dan" Beard illustrated magazines and boys' books. James's siblings all lived at Flushing, Long Island in 1910.
