I have a beautiful book "The Man of Galilee"
which was richly illustrated by Dean Cornwell. Not only did he sign this book in 1933, but he apparently did a quick sketch/self portrait
of himself in pencil and pen. Can anyone tell me what kind of value this might add? It was a great find!!

Artist's Letters
Artist's letters can have considerable value if the artist was very well known and of historical importance. Letters by painters like Monet, Van Gogh, Millet or other major art historical figures can be worth thousands of dollars, depending on who the letter was written to, the length and what the letter contains. Letters by American Illustrators and artists of lesser historical importance may range in value from fifty or seventy-five dollars to several hundred dollars. A short letter from an artist to a fan or concerning a routine business matter would be at the lower range in value, while a letter about a major exhibition, another artist or a major commission would be worth more. "DC" signature
I have an oil painting circa 1933 signed "DC 33" from connecticut. The scene is of a man and woman in a rowboat and a nearby swan.I was told it was by Dean Cornel or Cornwell.Has anyone seen Cornwell sign a painting in this manner? Any thought on who "DC" might be???
Thanks -

To Judy Faul
What you have sounds like a study for a larger, final painting or mural. Those were often done in gouache or watercolor.

They were usually a little more detailed than a sketch, which might only rough in shapes to work on the composition.

If you research Cornwell's work, you may find the final piece, which would then confirm that your's is a study.

Althought they don't list him as one of their artists, the Artists' Rights Society will aid you in finding the copyright holder of an artist's work.

I know Cornwell had children, as my husband and I purchased a painting from a son about 25 years ago. Illustration House acted as the agent, so they may have some contact information, too.

Picture found at old shop
I want to know about a picture that a friend found at an antique shop. It's call "That Mother's Might Live" (I Think), she said that it has Oliver Wendel Holmes name on it, and the dates 1809-1894 on it. It also says Dean Corwell name on it somewhere. If anyone has any info please e-mail me.
Thank You,
Donna
