Yacht Race Award Painting Robert Gaston Herbert painted regatta awards for the Sea Cliff Yacht Club. My father won the Wee Scott Class Saturday Series at the club in 1942 and was awarded a (16x20) painting of his boat sailing on Hempstead Harbor which also included, in the upper left hand corner, the particulars of the award. Herbert’s mastery of light, wind, wave and the intricacies naval architecture are clearly evident.

Painting by Robert G. Herbert We are in possession of a painting by Robert Gaston Herbert dated 1947. It was painted for Strettle F. Whitting, Sr. (founder: S.F. Whitting Funeral Home) while he was attending Embalming/ Undertaking School in NYC, NY. The story goes: Dad rode, from time to time, on the Long Island Railroad to NYC with Mr. Herbert. Apparently, Mr. Herbert was very interested in Dad and the vocation he was pursuing. Mr. Herbert then did an oil painting depicting his impression of death and gave it to Dad. We still have in our family.
