pacifica by Richard Yaso
I happened to come across the Pacifica painting by Richard Yaco and could swear that if a picture of me walking on the beach a couple of years ago or more before I cut my hair. Is there any way I could find out of Richard Yaco did any paintings of people on the beaches here in St. Petersburg Florida? My family all swears that looks just like me, my dress I usually wear on the beach,, everything. How can I find out?

I met Richard at Dong Ha, Viet Nam in the Spring of '68. He was sitting on a small folding stool sketching my aircraft as it sat parked on the ramp. I approached him and said that I had to fly a mission but if he was willing to wait for a couple of hours, I would return and he could finish then. He agreed and I took off only to return about 30 minutes later with my aircraft severely damaged....the result of a helicopter exploding in flight near me. I crash landed beside the runway at Dong Ha and the next thing I knew, there was Richard sitting on his folding stool sketching my aircraft. I still have his excellent charcoal work hanging in my home....truly an "early", one of a kind, Richard Yaco.

We talked quite a bit about his work as a Marine Combat Artist and how he would go into the villages, sit quietly on his stool and start drawing images of the people. They were not intimidated as they often were when we tried to take their pictures with a camera. Richard said that every culture understands and appreciates art in the form of drawings. He would do quick sketches..usually of children...and before long, most of the villagers would be gathered around him. From his sketches, he would make collages....many of them could be seen later in books of Marine Corps combat art found at Marine Corps recruiting tables.

He was quite dedicated and fearless in his work. He told me that he had free reign to travel wherever he wanted in the I-Corps combat zone and on numerous occasions had jumped aboard aircraft going to Khe Sanh during the incredible siege there in the early Spring of 1968. That was something that he didn't HAVE to do, but did. The true measure of a man who put himself in harm's way for duty and his art.

I am trying to contact him and would appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks!

Raymond Caryl

Richard was a dear friend when I lived in New York some years ago. Evidence of his talent still hangs on my walls. We've lost touch and I would like to find him. Do you have an email address or telephone #?
