Delaware Home Like everyone else here, I have an etching titled Delaware Home and sign Ernst C Rost. I believe the date (bottom left corner) is 1890. I found this print in the attic of an 1855 farmhouse on the Ohio River. It was not in the original frame, so I framed it in an old frame I had purchased. Should I have it famed again by an expert? Is it valuable? Thanks for all your help.

Etchings by Ernext C. Rost found in my garage I recently discovered two etchings by Rost stored in my garage. They were in ornate frames with glass. The etchings depict a house with a board fence around it on the right, a road and stream beside on the left, and 2 other houses above on the left. There are two large trees just outside the fence. A small bridge goes across the stream. They have Rost on the bottom left corner and dated 1880. The etchings themselves measure 8 inches by 20 inches and are on some kind of paper measuring 15 inches by 30 inches. Below the etching on the right side is written etched by Ernest C. Rost. I am now in the process of researching info on them. They do appear to be very old and may have belonged to my grandmother. I will be happy to send a photograph of them if anyone replys to this. Thanks for any help you can give me.

E C Rost Steel Engraving & Myra Robi Mystery picked this up a few years ago and in the upper left it says copyright 1895 by E Rost. It is remarked and signed Myra Robi - there in lies the mystery. Who is Myra Robi? The paper is somewhat brittle but only has one foxing mark in the lower left area. Someone wrote on the reverse side: steel envgraving. I was told Myra Robi may have been a name his sister used, she was also an engraver. In any case, any information or thoughts would be appreciated since I am not an art expert.

The Old Elm Road From reading the previous posts regarding this print,it would appear that it is quite common. I recieved mine from my parents when they relocated to Michigan from Arizona. At the time, it was rolled up and being stored in a plastic bag. Thank goodness for the dry Arizona climate! I remember the print from the days of my childhood and asked my parents if I could have it for reframing. It hangs with pride in my home and I love it! My grandkids love art and someday it will be theirs to share.

Rost Etching Over 30 years ago my mother bought an etching in an antique store in Tennessee. She later gave it to me as I had always loved to look at it. It is signed "etched by Ernest C. Rost", and has a small etched symbol beside the name. I cannot tell what the symbol is maybe a crown or hay bale. I put acid free matting around it in 1994 when I got it, but there is some significant acid streaking as well as blotches. It is still very fine. If anyone knows more about it or it's value, I would love to hear from you.

Old Elm Road by Ernest C. Rost The Old Elm Road - Ernest C. Rost
In the fall of 2007, while visiting relatives in eastern Kentucky, I found a remarkable framed etching of the Old Elm Road. It was in a quaint antique store in the small town of Grayson. I didn't have a clue who Ernest Rost was, but I was just fascinated by the workmanship - - so I bought it. It is in excellent condition - - original frame, glass, and all. After returning to Texas, I did a lot of research - trying to find out as much as I could about him (Rost). He was a talented, productive, if not somewhat eccentric individual. I'm proud to have a copy of his phenomenal work.

e c rost, old elm road I have an etching of Old Em Road also. I found it in my barn. My grand father used to clean house in Woods Hole MA on Cape Cod and sometimes he would get paid with things other than money or it could have been something they didn't want anymore. My etching is in good condition and is in a heavy frame with old glass. It has a gold strip on the frame that says The Old Elm Road etched by E.C. Rost. In the left hand corner is his name and date of 1890. I thought it was orginal but I don't know as I've seen noe that there is at least 2 more out there. I love this piece. I would love to here from others who have the same. Did he make lots of prints of his art? I'd love to learn more about him.

Etchings vs. pen & ink drawings I have several pieces of art which are "Pen & Ink"; - one is by E.C. Rost - "The Riverside Cottage" - 1890, and I am a bit puzzled as to why so many people refer to this form of art as "Etching". I have always understood "etching" to be that form of art wherein a form of art board is covered with a coat of black ink or paint, upon which the artist then actually "dry etches" his/her chosen subject "into the black coating" with various width steel scribers, resulting in a piece of art which, for lack of knowledge of the proper term, might be referred to as a form of "negative" i.e. - the subject is revealed by "removing the black medium" from the surface of the art board to creat the artwork, as opposed to "adding material" such as in oil, or water-color painting, or as in pen & ink drawings. All of which leads to the question, - Are we not in error when we refer to R.C. Rost's "Pen & Ink" as "Etchings"?

Ernest Rost While moving my grandmother in, about, 1985 we happened to run across a published ink print by R.C.Rost dated 1890 and published by Fishel, Adler, and Schwartz. It has no title. It has a large tree in the center of the print with a rock wall on the left hand side close to the tree. Across a lake or a stream on the left hand side is a village. In the forground is a remark of a man in a boat who is fishing. Any information would be appreciated.

Ernest Christian Rost I came accros 2 Rost prints in a firehouse auction. Everything about them was in bad shape, but the frames were cherry colored oak with metal pipeing which I restored, the glass was pre-industrial with that ripple effect. I sent the prints to the Pensylvania Art Conservatory were they removed the foxing, waterstains and made them appear new. They mounted on conservation paper and sent them back to me, then I had them remounted in the original frames with quality matting that has a light green leaf appearence. They are outstanding and I have no intention of selling them and at auction I would guess they would be received quite well ever if Rost is not recognized as well as I believe he should have been. His art is quite beautiful.

Old farmhouse etching by E.C. Rost An old farmhouse with a thatched roof a couple of horses out in front ready to hook up to a wagon. A bird house in the yard and a church in the background. On the lower left is a couple of hay stacks that look to be a practice etching. I'm wondering when this might have been done.

Earnest C. Rost I own two etchings, I purchased them at an auction for $75. I sent them to the Pennsylvania Art Conservatory where the restored them to nearly new condition. They are spectacular, I rematted and remounted the etchings in the beautiful red oak frames that I reconditioned. Instead of numbers in the lower left corner he placed a rabit in one and birds and a nest in the other with Singiture in the right lowwer right corner. The prints are 8X17 in size and depict a beautiful winter landscape of a road and the other of a similar road if not the same in spring. His work, is underappreciated and has gone unnoted in the art world.

Info for Christian H. Rost I have 3 pen and ink sketchings by Christian H. Rost or H. Christian Rost. The sketch is very old, as are my eyes at this point. I feel the sketches I have must belong to the Rost family I located on this site. The title of the largest of my sketches is: The Edge of The Forest. I'd appreciate any info anyone may have. The only info I've been able to get concerning Christian H. Rost is that he was one of the very first engravers at the mint in Philadelphia.

E. Crost I have either an etching or a lithograph done in tan and brown tones. It's dated 1891 and measures 17 3/4" x 12 1/2". I believe the frame is the original. The glass is VERY old. There is no title. It has trees, a road, fences, and homes. Somewhat like a country village scene. It has an odd paper matting (behind the picture) to appear like wood that is mitered at the corners. I can supply a photo of this picture. I would love to know more about it. The signature looks like it is E. Crost. Thank You

A Bend in the River It was so nice to read of the life of Ernest C. Rost, the man who created my print named A Bend in the River. I have had the print for 25 years and have always wondered about the artist. I have seen two other prints (owned by a friend) and two of what appeared to be watercolors but may have been hand tinted prints (at an antique store). It is nice to finally know about Mr. Rost.

Italian Landscape, 1907 Dear Gerry,
Hello. I'm the author of Ernest C. Rost's biography on this website.
I was wondering if you might be willing to take some photos, including signature, of the etching and mail to me. I may be incorrect, but there was another very recognized engraver of the period, Ernest D. Roth, who often did landscapes of Italian subjects. I think you may have an Ernest D. Roth, rather than an Ernest C. Rost (there was also and H.C. Rost an H.A. Rost, both publishers of etchings and postcards, not related to Ernest. It gets very confusing!). It would be wonderful if were wrong .... I'd love to see a Rost Italian landscape!
Let me know if you'd be willing to send some photos. Perhaps I can help with the identification.
All best,
Jonathan

Ernest C. Rost I own a large framed etching entitled "New England Farmhouse" dated 1890. I received it from the estate of my grandparents. I know nothing about it and am curious to know it's value, if any. My grandparents were common tobacco and potato farmers and did not collect art as such. Therefore I find this to be a curious possession of theirs.
