r farrington elwell bronze sculpture I have a bronze sculpture of an indian in a canoe, paddling through turbulent waters, by r farrington elwell. It is about 24" long and very heavy. It is quite detailed and depicts the indian as returning from a hunting trip. he has arrows in his quiver and ducks he has harvested amoung other items. I purchased it from an art dealer from oklahoma in 1995. The dealer provided a short bio on elwell at that time. He contacted me last in 2000 when he had more of elwell's pieces for sale. i do have the bio and the dealers name somewhere and would be willing to try to find it; if someone is interested. jerry

Robert Farrington Elwell I just started researching Mr Elwell, the artist of a large oil painting my father has had for maybe 70 years. Our family has enjoyed the piece, (a cowboy/horse shooting at a "bad guy over a boulder") but has never had any idea of who the artist was. Since I found this website, it appears there is a great deal of history and adventure behind both the artist and the piece.
I would like to know what town he was actually born in, (we are near Boston) so I can try to figure out how this painting got to the East coast and why. I would love hearing a few words about him as a person, his family, and about the travels of his life. I am also curious to what sort of value a painting like this may be worth...and how I could actually find out it's worth. Any feedback or information or inspiration is very much welcomed. Thank you!

Elwell Calendar At a recent estate sale of my mom's cousin (a developmentally disabled savant), I bought a piece of his calendar collection (many collections, there were)-- a 1924 promotional calendar of an auto company run in the middle of North Dakota by her cousin's dad and my grandfather, whose names are on it ... under a print from Mr. Elwell's "Where Work Is Play", featuring a man in foreground, pipe in teeth, kerchief at neck, knife on belt, filling the morning bucket with water from the creek while his partner in background beyond the campfire throws a line to catch breakfast, needed after a night in their wigwam tent seen past the bucketer's shoulder ... next to their trusty Model T ... and thus, its connection to an auto company calendar. So nicely done.

Elwell's great granddaughter I think that it is fascinating to know members of an artist family. They, of course, have incites that the general public is unaware of. I come from a line of artists myself and practice art as well as collect. I recently bought the piece "the council lodge" which I'm very fond of already. Your great-grandfather must have been quite a character as well as a fine painter. I had my own farm/ranch in Montana for a number of years and can well imagine part of the life Mr. Elwell lived. Please feel free to contact me. This goes as well for other collectors as well. Thank you. Kevin

R. Farrington Elwell We have recently acquired an undated painting by Western illustrator R. Farrington Elwell (1874-1962). By sheer dumb luck we also stumbled upon a photo-offset litho of the same painting at about the same time, thanks to this discussion board. I am attempting to nail down the date of the painting via the repro, but Elwell’s bio is somewhat elusive. The Lyman Gun Sight Corporation published "Sporting Prints," by Elwell, with six reproductions of his paintings. I do not have a date for the portfolio. Elwell also painted at least one image for a Winchester calendar and images for United States Cartridge. I am looking for any information or ephemera related to Elwell. Thank you.

Tuco Puzzle I had a Tuco puzzle when I was a kid, now 69 yrs old. I bought the same puzzle on Ebay after looking for months. It is entitled, An Unexpected Emergency, by P. Farrington Elwell. From the name on the puzzle, I came to this page. Puzzle depicts a horse on left, a cowboy on a log falling with rifle in his hands pointed at bear. 500 pieces. Thanks for bringing back memories of someone I was very glad to get more info on. His story is even more interesting. Thanks..Paul

Calendar covers Years ago I got a box of calendar samples at a sale of a man who sold calendars...2 of the prettiest western prints are Elwell ones. One depicts a cowboy on a bucking horse, the other a roped steer caught in a small sapling tree.
It is interesting to find info on the bio of Elwell...a true westerner! Good day.

Robert Farrington Elwell Robert Farrington Elwell was my greatgrandfather. I am thrilled to find his name and artworks listed here! I have two original oil paintings that I cherish. He was a wonderful and dear man with a great sense of humor and a true gentleman in every sense of the word.
