I have a beautiful large oil of a seascape done by Mr. Steene in Tryon North Carolina. My great aunt was a neighbor and bought this from him in his studio. ...she's 99.

I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas. There is a mural in our historic Courthouse painted in the 1920's and signed W H Steene. We are celebrating the Centennial of the Courthouse and this WWI Memorial mural which was commissioned by the local DAR Chapter is being featured. According to the little we know, Mr. Steene was from New York and that a similar mural of his is in Starkville, MS. If this is the work of the painter who is the subject of this page, any information which could be included in our Centennial Celebration would be appreciated.

Portrait of Bobby Jones
The Bobby Jones portrait done by William Steene was done in 1930 to commemorate his historic Grand Slam triumph. I know of no painting by Steene only 3 signed etchings (unless the etchings were done off a painting?) I believe the USGA has one and the other 2 are in private collections.

Steene's studio in Tryon NC
Circa 1940 he painted a number of portraits at Tryon, North Carolina including the president of Wofford College, and the founder of St. Luke's Hospital, Tryon, Dr. Jervey. The latter is exhibited in "Tryon Artists 1892-1942" May 18-June 23, 2001 in Tryon.
