Sargent's pallet I have been doing research on JSS and came across a list of the colors he used in a book published in 1933. Most of the colors are easy to identify but I am puzzled by two entries: Blanc d' Argent (which I believe is flake white and the other entry is "Chromes (Pale and Orange)." Would anyone be able to assist? Thank you,

Paul Halieu sketching with his wife (1889) Why do you think that in the painting named above, Sargent uses an overall composition on a key geometric form to heighten the particular feelings he wishes to convey

Chase painting of Sargent The recently released book William Merritt Chase-Portraits in Oil has a portrait titled Man Holding a Cigar. I have been told this was his friend John Singer Sargent. I would appreciate any info on this painting and the question of this possibility. Thanks.

Singer Sargent purchased 1946 My grandmother purchased a signed painting by JSS at an auction of major artworks by Edward Bowes in 1946. It is a rather bizarre painting signed by John Singer Sargent "to my friend St.? "in 1923. I believe it says St. Benet. The auction catalogue says St. Bressart (there aren't even that many letters in the name) It is a dark painting with 5 or 6 figures. One is a statuesque north africa/moroccan woman, one is english, one is french, one is venetian carnivale (maybe). The committee now says they won't include it in the catalogue without a specific reason. We are trying to find information about the painting. Thank you,

Real Hosea sketch or reproduction? I purchased what I believed to be a sketch of a man in a cloak. After doing some research, I have discovered that it is "Hosea" by John Singer Sargent. I initally believed this was a sketch done prior to his mural of The Frienze of Prophets, but now I am reading that many reproductions were made of "Hosea". How do I know whether or not my piece is an authentic sketch or a reproduction? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

John Singer Sargent I am looking for information re: John Singer Sargent and his painting of the Frieze of the Prophets - specifically Hosea. Would he have been living in London at the time he was doing figure studies and if so was he still teaching at the Royal Academy?

american impressionism "Hi I'm working on my MASTER research which is interested in the influnces of French Impressionism in the American artists. Would you please help me about the special features of the American Impressionism ?
I would like to know if these American artists JOHN WHITE ALEXANDER, JAMES WHISTLER, FRANK W . BENSON, MARY CASSATT, JOHN SINGER SARGENT, JULIAN ALDEN WEIR, JOHN HENRY TWACHTMAN, CHILDE HASSAM William Merritt Chase had been influenced by certain French Impressionists . What were the kinds of influences such as techniques and so on? What were the differences between the American Impressionism and the French? And what were the similarities between them?
thank you for your time

John Singer Sargent I am editing a book by Margaret Collyer RA, who mentions John Sargent as a benefactor as well as an artist, in particular with reference to an artist, Katherine Willis, RA, who died of tuberculosis. I think the date would have been about 1900. If anyone knows any thing that can be added to this story, I would be grateful. Susan Duke

Balfour Portrait News The Times Online--London-reported the following story today:
"...The National Art Collections Fund increased its grant by more than £125,000 to £277,000, meeting a shortfall for the £900,000 the National Portrait Gallery needed for a portrait of Arthur Balfour by John Singer Sargent....The 1908 picture of one of the pivotal figures in British politics from the late 1880s to the late 1920s had hung in the Carlton Club since its commission, but would have had to go to an unnamed American dealer if last Friday’s deadline had not been met...The work was one of the last great full-length Sargent portraits left in private hands in Britain... Commissioned by subscription from Carlton Club members in 1908, three years after the Earl of Balfour had stepped down as Prime Minister, the portrait had remained at the club since."

Sargent's "Madame X"; or, Assertion and Retreat in Woman I hope everyone interested in John Singer Sargent visits this very important paper by Lynette Abel. It is one of the finest critical writings on Sargent and it shows the relation of art and life in a new and exciting way. Abel's basis is the philosophy Aesthetic Realism, founded by the great poet and critic Eli Siegel. The URL is http://www.lynetteabel.org/Art.html
