Puppy and Chicks painting I just found a painting of a brown and white puppy looking at two new born chicks, written to the side is "who are you?" This painting is on hand stretched canvas and is at least 50 years old, may well be 100 years old. The painting is not signed, it is about 13 X 18 inches. The subject is clearly in line with Ben Austrian's work, and this has been done by a good artist, though the brush work appears to be less precise and refined than the pictures of Austrians works I have seen. I'm wondering if this might be an early work of his, and if anyone has a suggestions as to how I might find out if not his, who the artist might be.

Battle of the Chicks Lithograph I'm trying to find some information about a Lithograph by Ben Austrian titled, "Battle of the Chicks." The scene is of several chicks behind two center chicks who are dueling over a yellow moth. The expressions on all the chick's faces give the print a lot of personality! It is approximately 34 inches long, and 8 inches high. I believe it is at least one of the early editions of the print. Unfortunately, my grandmother used it as a backing to mount family photographs in the early 1900's, and the photographs could not be removed without further damaging the deteriorated condition of the print paper. There are several holes in the print, but there are three good sized areas toward the ends that could be separated and framed. Can anyone tell me what the approximate value would be if it is kept together, and the entire print be displayed in this poor condition? If in good condition, what would have been it's value? My family did not have a lot of money, so they used whatever was available to mount their photographs. They lived in a small rural town in Kentucky. My dad was born in 1911, and the pictures in the frame were of my grandparents before he was born, and of him taken when he was a baby. Thanks!

"Protection" I inherited a Ben Austrian painting of 2 chicks, one yellow and one grey/black huddled in a coconut shell. The painting is an oil done on a wood panel signed Ben Austrian & dated 1916. Years ago I found a reproduction tin for Bon Ami cleanser with the painting on the lid. Does anyone know anything about this painting or its value? I appreciate any help!

Puppy gazing at chick Last summer I Purchased at a estate sale, an old tattered picture of a dark brown puppy gazing curiuosly at a baby chick; both are surrounded by straw. The work is in excellent condition, and is signed, "Curiosity" and signed Ben Austrian. The medium appears to be pastel on paper.

Ben Austrian A correction to the listed biography: Ben austrian developed the chick logo for Bon ami Cleanser. Also he was 51 when he died. More detailed information can be found in Artists of Berks County: An Overview 1850-1920, published by Greshville Antiques.
