I have a 5 X 7 of George B. Luks "Boy With A Baseball". On the back is a seal which reads Royale Acadamie Collections Precious Minitures. Would like to know more about it and the value. Thank you.

I have a sketch with this signature; looks like Luks period. G is same as other signatures. Has anyone ever seen this abbreviation?

If you are an admirer of George Luks and his art, I direct you to the Eugene H. Thomason listing on this website. On the summary page you will see a photograph of a portrait of Mr. Luks in his studio painted by his close friend and associate, Eugene Thomason. He and Mr. Luks lived together intermittently for 10-11 years while they jointly operated a teaching studio for advanced students. This life-size portrait was one of over 1000 works exhibited by the Society of Independent Artists at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in early April 1928. The art critic at the exhibit, writing an article for "The Art Review," named about eight of the artists, Mr. Thomason among this number, and wrote the following: "Eugene Thomason's Portrait of George Luks is so far from flattery that one wonders if the great George before admitting that it was a swell picture, did not remind Mr. Thomason of his identity, as he is said to have reminded a certain waiter at Mouquin's on an occasion long since past. It is a virile and dynamic picture of a virile and dynamic painter, unprettied, natural and not in the least solemn, in no way profound, but as far as it goes portrait painting of the first and finest order. But all the adjectives in the world can't give you an idea of it. It is well worth going out of your way to see." (The Charlotte Observer, Sunday, April 29, 1928) The newspaper article entitled "Metropolitan Critics Acclaim Young Charlotte Artist" devoted an entire page to Mr. Thomason's early life, his studies in New York, and his long association with George Luks. Also featured in the article was a photograph of Eugene Thomason and his fine portrait of Luks, "said by critics to be one of the great paintings of the year."

It is pivotal for my book to acquire reproduction permission for the Luks oil on board advertsed and illustrated in the Braswell Galleries Antiques @ Estates Auction May 16th, 1999 auction catalogue. It is entitled Young Turk. I was told in 1999 that it was withdrawn from auction. I would truly like to illustrated it in my book. Please let me know where I can acquire this permission for my next book.

Kid Coy
Whatever happened to "Kid Coy"? When my father studied under George Luks and later operated an art studio with him during the 1920's, they would have various exhibitions of the students' works at some of the local galleries, one of which was Anderson Galleries. My father had entered his painting of a young boxer by the name of "Kid Coy". A color gravure reproduction of this painting appeared in a magazine or newspaper called "The World," dated Sunday, August 11, 1929, with the following caption: "KID COY --By Eugene Thompson [[]my father's last name had been misspelled]: An exceedingly youthful pugilist sits in his corner of the ring waiting for the clang of the bell which will send him into action. The painting was shown at a recent exhibit of work by pupils of George Luks, held in Anderson Galleries, by whose courtesy it is reproduced." It is a marvelous painting and so unique, a child boxer. If anyone has ever seen this painting or has any idea where it might be, I would like to hear from you. My father may have given it to George Luks as a gift. I am curious about the painting referenced above; it's location, date, etc. My father had asked me for many years to see if I could find the painting as he recalls sitting for it. He was a farm boy in Chatham, NY.

We owned a drawing by George Luks entitled "At the Zoo," charcoal on paper,that was never returned to us by a framer circa 1990. Should anyone know the whereabouts of such a drawing, information would be appreciated.
