James Montgomery Flagg

Shopping for his wife
I have a picture by Flagg of a man shopping for silk stockings for his wife. There are 4 laughing female clerks behind the counter that make him feel very small. I would like to know more about it, and where the original is located.

Monteague (Monty Flagg)
I have come across a print of Johnny Laughing Wolf by Monteague. I've been reading this discussion board and find it very interesting. Is there any value to his prints? The back has a price tag from Pahaska Tepee for $1.00. Not sure when that was bought, but was wondering if the print has any value at all? Thanks, Darlene

Flagg Lineage
I am also a descendent of James Montgomery Flagg. I am in University taking art and while looking up some of his work for a project I came across this message board. I would love to correspond with Donna Liddell. I have a geneology chart that clearly shows the lineage if that is of any interest. Thanks

Pencil Drawings
My son bought me 2 pencil drawings of Monte Flagg at an Estate Sale/Auction.
Little Big Sun and Little Princess Corn Flower.
These both are signed and have a circle C (which probably means "copy")?
Anyway, I'm interested in knowing more about the artist and the meanings of his work. I'm native american and have started collecting different kinds of pieces.
Thank you in advance for any pertinent information.

Flagg Drawings
Flagg drawings all have value, the best thing is to provide images with sizes as Flagg's works can vary greatly in value due to subject matter and condition. The patriotic subjects are in greater demand. Jeffrey Morseburg, Morseburg Galleries

Flagg Painting.
I own an oil on canvas painting signed James Montgomery Flagg lower right. It appears to be a speak easy with women's clothing very 1930. A young man in suit is leading his frightened girlfriend in and there is a piano player with cigarette in mouth. Painting done all in black, white and different shades of gray. Absolutely authentic due to the provenance. Any knowledge of this painting is appreciated.

Original James M. Flagg sketch
I own an 8x10 original signed and dated pencil and water color sketch by Flagg in its original pine frame. The auction house stamp is still attached.
It is dated 1942 and titled Flower Plants.
It depicts a view looking down on a horse drawn cart hauling flowers.
Any thoughts.

Monte Flagg
I just came across a Monte Flagg picture, that was behind a really old Marilyn Monroe picture, that I picked up at a antique swap meet. It is called Princess Big Sky. I really like it, it was a nice surprise!

Monte Flagg Indian Child Portrait
Like Lori, I also have a pastel portrait of an Indian child that is signed with the circled c and the name Flagg. It is an adorable toddler with chubby cheeks and colorful Indian dress.

After close examination, I believe mine is a print but the signature is original. At any rate, it is very old. I found it in an old broken frame at an estate sale. Nobody seems to have any information on this portrait. I've emailed several dealers with inquiries and they all seem to think that I'm referring to James Montgomery Flagg as the artist. They have all sent me the same reply, "I cannot identify this artist".

I've seen several posts on various message boards from people who have a similar piece so it really baffles me that these portraits seem to be "unknown" by the experts.

I would appreciate any information that anyone may have as to their value, etc.. I especially would like to be able to verify the artist.

Thanks, Fern Marie

Monte Flagg Indian pictures
My Father was a truck driver and sometime around 1953-1955 he brought home 2 pictures by Monte Flagg. One is a little indian girl and it is called "Little Summer Rain" The other is a little indian boy and the title is "Running Horse"
Both are signed be Monte Flagg. Under the name Monte Flagg is also the Letter "C" with a circle around it.

We belive that on my dad's travels he may have seen these pictures being done and they caught his eye and he purchased. My mom does not remember the story anymore as she was young at the time and you don't think it will be any big deal later on........Now I am curious.....

Over the last few years I have periodically attempted to find something on this Monte Flagg and have been unable to do so until now. These pictures were never in a frame until I framed them a few years ago. They were matted but my mother always kept them between a couple pieces of Cardboard and had them put away. She gave them to me several years ago and I did the same until finally I framed them and have them hanging in my office.

Can you tell me What the value of these pictures may be or where I may find more information.

Thank you very much for your time.

Karon

Looking for original oil by JMF of Joe Palooka in boxing ring
We believe this painting is approximately 2'x 4'in size. JMF was commissioned by Ham Fisher (our cousin) the creator of Joe Palooka cartoon strip to paint this oil painting. The painting was last seen in his wife Marilyn Seigel Fisher's Manhattan apartment in 1955 after Ham's death. We would like to find this painting if anyone knows its wereabouts

I wish to locate the author of a catalog raisonne on JMF oil paintings or information where his documents are located. Thanks!

James Montgomery Flagg and Howard Chandler Christy
My mother-in-law described these to me so excuse any inaccuracies. About 20 years ago she purchased 3 Navy (military) Christmas Cards dated 1912, 1913 and 1914. The first was illustrated by James Montgomery Flagg. It is in an embossed portfolio which says "Christmas Greetings". It is a picture, in color, of a young woman and a goat (a Navy thing). The size is approximately 8-1/2" X 13". The next two (1913 and1914),
also young women in various poses and with Navy themes, were both illustrated by Howard Chandler Christy. These are both slightly larger and are in color. They were apparently sent by the Navy. Your're probably not interested in the latter two but if you have any info on any or all I'd love to know about it.

Hope this helps,

Jeffrey Watson

There was a Monte Flagg who was no relation to "Uncle Sam" Flagg
Monte Flagg was a Brother to Western Woodcarver, Dee Flagg. They settled in Scottsdale, Arizona. By a weird fate, their Father was also named James Montgomery Flagg. Both Monty and the Father were both accomplished Western Artists. The Father did alot of Landscapes and Portraits of Early Western Icons. Monty did a little of everything, but he is best known for his portraits of Indian Children.

Monty

For a short while in our lives while living in Scottsdale Ariz. Monty was a guest in our home many times. It was the 50's and to 4 small kids from the east he made it feel just that much more western.
He would show up looking like Buffalo Bill and sit and teach us to draw horses. I'am sure it drove him crazy.........but he never let on

Flagg self-portrait
I have a pen and ink Flagg self-portrait, looking fierce and rather disillusioned, done some time between 1943 and 1947, on a page of white 8 1/2 x 11 paper, either in the office of the Editor of, or for, _This Week_ Magazine (national weekly Sunday supplement for the N.Y. Herald Tribune and 28 other major U.S. newspapers).
I think it's quite a significant and signifying small piece of history, and am trying to figure out what to do with it.

Flagg and feminism
Flagg illustrated the change of fashions and character of the femme fatale, but more importantly emphasized the ever-fluctuating climate surrounding the definition of a woman. Flagg’s portrayal of his saucy ladies placed them in controlling positions over men, a woman sporting a trained monkey on a leash, with the caption of “Has this ever happened to you?” or his famous fade away girls that proved to be man’s nightmare. How do you perceive Flagg's art regarding the role of women in the media in the turn of the twentieth century? Do you see him as a supporter or opponent to the feminist movement of the time?

JM Flagg
JMF wrote an autobiography titled Roses and Buckshot. It has reprints of many of his portraits and sketches of hollywood stars and President Roosevelt.
