Jane Peterson's scope I have a painting that causes some folks problems. It is a lovely scene with an orchard in the foreground, steeply sloping down to a lake, with a village and snow-capped mountains on the far horizon. The signature is J. Peterson. The late Marion Nelson, formerly the curator of the Norwegian-American in Decorah, Iowa, had no hesitation identifying it as an early Jane Peterson. Nelson was an expert on Peterson. He said that it was distinctively Peterson's early style, not well known to those on the Eastern Seaboard, but better known to museums and collectors in her native Midwest, where she sold a large number of her early works, and where many early works were given to her family and friends. The use of the initial J. was also a hallmark of many of Peterson's early works, according to Nelson, as a way of getting beyond the prejudice against female artists. Nelson identified the medium of my piece as artist's board, a term I was not familiar with. He said that the mountain/lake/orchard setting could either be from her trip to the Pacific Northwest, or an early trip to the Italian Alps. Because my piece differs a bit from Peterson's later style, many find it hard to believe that it is hers. Some say that it is a forgery, done to capitalize on the recently soaring prices. But my father bought my piece on a business trip to Chicago in the late Forties as a treat to himself. The only thing that I am absolutely certain of is that I love it.

Jane Peterson Oh, how lovely to see this wonderful artist featured here. I have a stunning guache of hers - lilly pond or fig leaves (not sure) - that makes me smile every day.

J. P.'s travels For more than fifty years, I have had her painting of an Italian market scene of oxen, pigs and people. She inscribed it "Montecastrilli 2-8-35". Can anyone tell me anything about this trip? Was she attending the festival? Was she alone, with others, or any other details? Even though he had been dead for ten years, it has strong influences of J. S. Sargent. Thanks
