No inventaory coding on my Hibbard No indication of a coding as you describe on my Hibbard. Perhaps he used this coding only on later (post 1950) paintings.

Inventory Coding? I have a terrific Hibbard. On the reverse is the number 7X-40. I have heard some reference to this being an inventory number assigned by Hibbard. Is this true? What, if any, information can be derived from this number? Perhaps date, location, title?

Hibbard The Rockport Art Association told me that Hibbard did not sign his paintings with N.A. I was fortunate to grow up with a beautiful Hibbard painting in our living room, a late afternoon snow scene of the icy Ammonoosuc River with light glittering across the ice from behind a rocky cliff. No doubt it was painted on site, as were most of his snow paintings. Interestingly, my mom was a neighbor of his in Rockport during the late 1940s. She told me how she went to his gallery on Bearskin Neck in the spring when he returned from Vermont with a load of new paintings, and picked out the one she believed was the very best. To this day I marvel at the surperb brushwork. He made it look so easy! As an artist myself, I can only admire his mastery of the medium, and under conditions that must have been bitterly cold.
