The Greatest Western Artist
I totally disagree with the first comment here on Terpning's work by the person, If his true name were the same as mine, Mian Situ.
I am Mian Situ, an artist painting the Chinese American experience. Although Howard Terpning's subject is totally different from mine, He is always my inspiration when it comes to telling story by paintings. I consider him the greatest artist in the art of American west.I admire not only his technique but also the significant meaning he put into his art. In His paintings the people live exactly in the historical period when the story happens. Howard terpning’s later works are as strong as his earlier ones. To prove my point, you just need to look at his “Journey to the Medicine Wheel” and ‘Force of Nature Humbles All Men”.

I love Howard Terpning's works, but
I love Howard Terpning's work, but always wonder why there is such obvious quality variation in his paintings. Acutually the works done in the mid 90s are the best, and the worst works are those done during the last a few years. Anyway, I admire him for his kindness and hard-working spirit.

Arizona Highways September 1986
The front and back covers of this issue, as well as several inside pages, have examples of Terpning's work. All are in color.

The front cover, 'The Legend of Geronimo,' was commissioned by the magazine and was one of the artist's entries in the 1986 Cowboy Artists of America show.

Back cover, 'Entering Apache Stronghold.' Inside pages: 'Plunder from Sonora,' quarter page. 'Second Geronimo Campaign,' 2-page spread.

The Contents page also has a thumbnail-size color photograph of Terpning.

I wonder if anyone knows if the great artist Howard Terpning
I would love to know if anyone knows if the great artist Howard Terpning uses the traditional techniques of toning, underpainting, glazing and scumbling? Many of his paintings look like they use alla prima technique. I am an aspiring art student and I love Mr. Terpning's style. Can anyone help me?
