James Carlin - Howard St., Newark
I have the priviledge of purchasing a double sided water color picturing 'neighborhood folk' on Howard St across form the old Howard Baths in the early thirties - a neighborhood I knew well as a child. In speaking with Mr Carlin he mentioned that times were tough and he sometimes used two sides of a paper

James Carlin - Boardwalk
James Carlin was my grandfather and if you have a painting of his looking out to the Atlantic I would guess that it would be Belmar, as that is where he would take my grandmother and mother and aunt often. Either Belmar or a nearby boardwalk (i.e. Bradley Beach) I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post such kind words about him. He was a really fun and unique grandpa and is greatly missed.

James Carlin - the Boardwalk
I just came into possession of this painting looking out to the Atlantic with 4 benches on the boardwalk. Does anyone know about this scene?

I was a student of James Carlin at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art from 1965 to 1968. He was a wonderful person and an inpriration to me to focus on my painting.

I knew Mr. Carlin personally. He was my Uncle John's best friend. He was a charming gentleman
with great sense of humor, an excellent friend and great human being. I will always remember him.

My Instructor 1973-1976
A good teacher at NSFIA. I majored in illustration and took painting and drawing plus some of the other subjects offered. I remember James Calin gave us an assignment to do an egyptian type of art and I really enjoyed it. I'm still painting.

James Carlin
Like others who have posted here, I also studied under James Carlin at the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Arts in the early 60's. I was an Industrial Design major and Carlin's wonderful personality was appreciated by all the students who were lucky enough to have a class or two with him. Its truly a shame that NSFIA didn't ever get accredited because it mirrored Pratt which was also a 3-year school for many years. And with staff who also taught at Pratt and Cooper Union... we had some of the best faculty in the region. Jim Carlin was one of the best at getting you to think visually and abstractly and then pulled it into your work. A wonderful teacher and artist.

I own his travel paint easel
I studied with James Carlin at the Newark School from 1971-1974. I am very much in the field still painting away. I'm President of Allied Artists of America, Honorary Member of The Salmagundi Club and listed in Who's Who in American Art. I bought Carlin's Painting Travel Easel from him for $20 way back in 1972. It was old when I got it from him so by now it must be almost 100 years old but still going strong. I still use it when I do watercolor demonstrations. He was a great guy. I miss him and everytime I set up the easel I think of him and everything he taught me.

A Carlin Memory
All of the teachers at NSFIA were unique individuals, but Mr. Carlin was special; I took classes with him in '73 and '74. Somewhere among my boxes of art school stuff is a small etching (scratched into a plexiglass plate) he made of a burlesque show. I heard that once, during a trip to Belfast, he came across the aftermath of a scene of violence, which he stopped to sketch - possibly risking his own safety; this to me was the embodiment of what an artist was supposed to be. He was a great teacher and a very funny guy who never failed to make us laugh, and it's nice to see him being remembered.

Former student
I also studied at Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art between 1955 and 1958 and had James Carlin as one of my instructors. I majored in advertising. He was a wonderful teacher and person. Both my wife, Jacqueline (Raia) and I enjoyed his classes and his wit.

Another Former Student
I studied under Mr. Carlin in 1973-1974 at the Newark School. I remember him as being a very helpful and positive instructor. We got along really well and one of my fondest memories is of the day he presented me with several small illustrations that had been used in advertisements in the 40's or 50's. These paintings are now framed and on display in my house. As a professional artist, his words and methods are still with me. God bless James Carlin.

Former student
I also studied at Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art between 1966 and 1969 and had James Carlin as one of my instructors since I majored in illustration. He was a wonderful teacher and person. I recently met someone else who had graduated about 5 years before me and we were comparing notes on teachers - and Mr Carlin's name was top on both of our lists. So I was curious if he were still alive, and found this site.

an old friend
I was an instructor at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial art , in Newark NJ from 1965-1971 , and it was my pleasure to be aquainted with Jim Carlin, he was very proud of his daughter, and would many times bring in portraits of her as examples for the classes to see, always with a funny story, and that smile of the devil himself, as a fellow Irishman I could do no wrong. He was particularly fond of Hans Weingaertner, also a painting instuctor.

Family Connections
James Carlin was my uncle. Apparently he died in 2005 (aged 98/99) but my family have had little or no contact with him since my father, Myles (James' brother) died in 1972 in England.
I would appreciate any further information or contact from James' two daughters.
'Uncle Jim' used to visit us in England in the 1960s enroute to France and/or Belfast. We always enjoyed his visits and have fond memories of the drawing games that he used to play with us.

My aunt Anne
Mr. Carlin was my aunt's art instructor, as well as her friend.
I remember as a little girl taking the bus to his home with my aunt. I remember especially, how I would love looking at the Christmas cards he would send. I still have them. I also am lucky enough to have a few of his paintings.
I get a plesant feeling and fond memories of my dear aunt each time I look at one of them.

I wish Mr. Carlin pleasant days.

James Carlin was an instructor of mine at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts in New Jersey many years ago. His work has influenced me in my work today. We have kept in touch throughout the years and as always I wish him well.
