Laura Ann

To Donna L. Davies, Tammy Hill, anyone else who owns gg wiederseim or Grace
Hi ! My name is Laura Ann, and my Aunt Grace Drayton, is a wonderful artist. She, in her "age" was married twice, her full maiden name is Grace Gebbie, then her first marriage she used that name as Grace Gebbie Drayton, after that divorce and her final marriage she used G.G. Wiederseim or similar.

I finally found a book that she published. It's a children's book, from her children's comics Bobby Bounce & Dolly Dimples. It was my mothers book, that I finally found in items which has been packed away. Their is a painting which she wrote in the corner to my grandmother Rena & to baby Gloria. Then she sold partial patent to the Cambell's, part of the other side of a marriage, they became the Campbell Soup kids. My momther had extensive collections, but after her death, no one can find anything. She even had a "Scotty iron cast door holder".

You can find my previous discussions, as my health is getting bad and I cannot sit too long and type. She is on the discussion board and I am searching for a particular painting, and for years now cannot find it, but I have other antique works of art, and have learned what to do so protect them.

My health has prevented me to answer a few on this board who have done extensive starting bio's on her, but I have been visiting my only relative on my mom's side of the family, which my mom's side of the family is totally Scotch, then through marriage, one of the Gebbie girls married into a German family of great stature. My Oncle (Scotch) has an extensive collection of her work, and it is overwhelming. I am just hopeful that he will give me some, at a point in time. I love him so so much and an hopeful to visit him this beginning of the summer.

SO ~ Does your artwork have an original signature on it ? I would take it to an art appraiser, all of your art that is valuable! Use this site to find a reputable appraiser in your area that has expertise of this type of artwork! Obtain a print out of each item, name, information and value. Then add it to your home owners insurance just incase, you never know. Put a copy and if small items, put all into a saftey deposit box.

Then ask the appaiser is he or she knows of anyone that restores fine artwork like you own. I would not touch it. If you have an extra dresser lay the art work down so it is not in light or in anyway of possible damage.

Good luck, I wish I could be of more help, via email perhaps that might be fun to see your works ~
All my best, Laura Ann

September Morn
I have a framed "September Morn" I inherited in the late sixties with other treasures. It is so old that I hesitate removing it from the frame or disturbing it. It appears to be watercolors but maybe not. I guess it is just a print tho' it looks so original.

g.g. wiederseim artwork
I have the same piece of artwork described previously by roy beno. Little girl (w/campbell soup child face) sanding in front of a chalkboard with a small white dog (wearing a blue ribbon around his neck) sitting at her feet. It is protected under glass in a very old wood frame. The frame measures 11-1/2" x 13-3/4". I would appreciate if someone could give me some insight to this particular piece--ie...date, origin, possible value??? I had taken it to a "Free for all" art show in Florida back in 2006. The supposed Art Appraiser was completely clueless and had NEVER heard of this Artist. I thank you for your help and input.

original watercolor by gg drayton
I have inherited a beautiful, very large watercolor painting by GG Drayton. It is of a little girl at an ironing board ironing doll clothes, with a doll in a basket on the floor. the doll in the basket has the Campbell soup kids face. The artist's pencil sketch is visible under the watercolor. It is adorable. It was given to my grandmother when my mother was a child, by my grandmother's brother- in -law, who was an artist in N.Y.C. I am interested in it's value, and would like feedback from Laura Ann, who appears to be a relative of the artist.

To Cindy...
Cindy, yes I am a direct relative of my Great Aunt Grace. I just posted of the web site "Ask Art" & also telling all to get a specific appraiser to give the value and might have "stories" of your items. All items & other antique items should be appaised...

Our family is collecting all of our art work by her and have a large collection as all family members have put theirs in a central location.

I am sorry to say this, but we are working on all her artwork and her history and my Oncle does not want us to reveal anything at this time. Read the two posts of her "in process" bios on this board. That will get you started. Also the internet. Thank you, and when the family makes all available, I will post on...also, the painting that was stolen from my side of the family, if you or anyone else finds it, I would be extremely grateful to get it back, it means more than words can say, or any of her other artwork, as it was done specifically for my Grandmother.

Thank you again, Laura Ann

Laura Ann

I'm related to my Great Aunt Grace...
Hi ! I posted before, so look for my earlier post. I am still searching for that painting that is described in my earlier post. Our family is collecting all our items of hers that is now at my Oncle Bills. Oncle is
Scottish and he and the older relatives use that. She came over to the US from Glasgow, as did the rest of our family when they left Scotland. And then she went back via her second husband Wiederseim. Her first marriage was of course to Drayton.

There are two great bios of her on the board, so I would suggest reading those. There is also a site called "Ask Art" you do have to pay a monthly fee, and they list a long long list of artists. Hers is on there. They notify you via email when a piece of her artwork is going to be auctioned, or is up for auction. They also list the Auction Houses of those. I advise all of you to check that out. As far as what items of hers that you have, go to a specific appraiser, which you have to pay for, and those can be added to your home insurance. They would be the only ones to give you a value, or submit to the Auction houses, and they would put them up, but I do believe your appraisal needs to be done. You will find out more from your appaiser. Some have great stories to tell of any antique items you may have.

Thank you Laura Ann

I have two very old prints which belonged to my grandmother in Aberdeen. She had them from the early 1950's at least. They are obviously a pair and show a small girl and a toddler (with runny nose). In the first she says, " Where's 'oo hanky?" and in the second says, "Blow!!".

Hi, I have a old 8x11 signed picture of a little girl from the Campbell soup era. She is standing by an open door with a string attached to her mouth, it is titled "COURAGE" It belonged to my mother who had it from the 40's when she was a child.

Grace Drayton
I am researching Grace Drayton and am a doll collector.
The naked child wading in the water is called "September Morning with Apologies". The apologie part was because she was reproducing the art of an award wining artits, Paul Chabas who had painted a nude lady in the water. She did a similar painting called "September Moon." This one has the moon in the background and the caption is.."Oh goodnes, oh gracious, please take me home soon. I just happened to think, there's a man in the moon."

GG Drayton art print
I found an old art print of a naked child wading in the water with a hill in the background and the moon is rising over the hill. The little girl(?) is looking over her left shoulder with a surprised look on her face. In the lower left hand corner is a copyright sign and the words Campbell Art Co. and under that is written Elizabeth, N.J.I think the title may be "September Morning" after reading some other postings.Does anyone know the age or value of this print?

Have you seen this artwork?
I am a deendent of Grace Gebbie Drayton's and I am searching for a watercolor painting she painted with an oval frame. The woman in the picture she painted was beautiful with Victorian style hair up, auburn in color. White background. She wore a white dress off the shoulder and a sash. She also wore a Victorian Hat and had a tree with delecate green leaves in the background. I would be most appreciative if anyone ever finds this peice of meaningful artwork, it was taken from our family.

I recently bought at auction here in Australia,an artwork signed G.G.Drayton.I did not know anything about this artist but was attracted to the subject. One of two originals stolen by moving company
When my mother was young - she is nearly 88, Grace Drayton went to a dentist on Park Avenue. Her aunt was the secretary and Ms. Drayton did two wonderful pictures for my mother. I have one with a young girl and young boy sitting in a classroom with a beautiful teacher on the right. The teacher asks "Why do we place a hyphen in a bird - cage? Followed by Bobby - "I know! For the birdie to sit on"! The large one my mother and I cherished was quite large and had an Easter Bunny and young girl with a basket and fluffy petticoats. It was "stolen" twice and it really was amazing how we got it back and how we got it back from Alaska to New York. After my husband returned from Vietnam we were stationed in VA and then moved to MI. I made the terrible mistake of not placing it in the car for the move. The military gave it no value.

Saturday Morning
Thank goodness, my twin and I now know the name of a print belonging to our grandmother! Printed in it is a Campbell Art Company copyright symbol and 2505 which we think might be the number of the copy. G.G. Dayton's signature is in the left bottom corner. The frame at one time had a paper backing and the paper board is held in place with 20 nails. (We have not removed them to see what is on the back of the print.)
We remember that our grandmother had a similar picture of a little boy standing in water. Can anyone tell us about it?

Would appreciate any info you may have.
Thanks,

Hi There,
What a lot of research you must have done to get so much information. I've printed off a copy and will try to find some of the articles. I shall especially look out for your "Hug Me Doll" and hope I'll be able to find something on my pictue of "Topsy". I wonder if there are any museums showing GD art. On my next trip to US I would like to visit if any such exhibitions exist.
Thanks for all the information Cella.

Grace Drayton
Hello, I found a lot of info at the library and bought a lot of books, magazines etc on ebay. I'll list them in the order that I find most helpful: Collector's Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls by Urrsula R. Mertz; Spinning Wheel's Complete Book of Dolls edited by Albert Christian Revi and their magazine issue Nov 1974; Celebrity Doll Journal Nov 1974, Feb.1975, May 1975; a very good three part series in Doll News Spring 1988, Summer 1988, Fall 1988 (Doll News Winter 1998 has two of her animal dolls Puppy Pippin and Frisky Fido)[Doll News Summer 1983 has pic and story of reproduction bisque kids that were used as centerpieces for a doll convention.]{Doll News Winter 1982 has nice article by Pauline Luckey} [Doll News Spring 1982 has nice pic of Kaptin Kiddo and short story]; The Toy Trader booklet that I can't find at the moment...is also very thorough. My personal favorite (although not the most informatively complete) is The Antiques Journal Dec 1973 because...it has the article that first authenticated my "Hug Me Tight" rag doll "Goldilocks"!! lol Cloth Dolls by Johanna Gast Anderton has lots of pics of Drayton dolls; including those by Dean's dolls made in 1982 where the boy is in red and the girl in aqua. I have an uncut set of the originals of these. They are only 9 1/2" tall. They show him in an aqua onsie,"TEDDIE" on his white collar point, two dogs trying to pull a doll apart on the back of his belt with "BRITISH MANUFACTURE GUARANTEED". She is in red, with "PEGGY" on the edge of her collar and the same logo on her back bow. (They reversed the colors from him to her and her to him for the repros.) Hope you find these sources helpful. Grace Drayton
Hi Suzanne, I was pleased to learn someone else was trying to gather information about Grace Drayton. Information in the UK is very sparse. I've tried to do some research and ascertained she did spend some time in France, I think she studied at the French academy at the beginning of the last century, so she may well have known Paul Chabas personally.

I have a drawing of Topsy from Uncle Tom's Cabin which belonged to my Dad, a "Campbell face" with real ribbons in her hair. I did track down a vague reference to her connection with that book on the Internet but would like more details.
If you let me have your e-mail address and I learn any more about the "French connection" I'll be in touch.
Kind Regards, Joan Earl

Grace Gebbie Drayton Print
I have a print that had belonged to my grandparents and was treasured by my mom. It is by GG Drayton and is entitled September Morning. The print depicts a young girl (cherubic "Campbell's face) barely covering herself as she wades in the cold water. Along with it's sub-title, "Please don't think I'm bad or bold, but where it's deep, it's awful cold," there is a note added that read, "To Paul Chabas - My Apologies. G. Drayton," an obvious reference to Chabas' famous September Morn painting. I would love to communicate with someone who may know a little more about Ms. Drayton and this work.
