John Ford Clymer
I wish to comment on a prior posting. The Clymer Museum of Art in Ellensburg, Washington, has been assisting folks with their queries and providing answers to questions about Clymer works as best we can. As you may know there is no definitive tome on John Clymer that could be used as a resource for information. His career was established in illustration art;later in his life he began his historic depictions of the settlement of the Frontier. We are a small museum and staff, a non-profit and we work very hard to assist those that call or e-mail us.

Valuation of 2 Clymers
Several years we were given 2 Clymers: 1 depicts several covered wagons passing through a valley with mountains off int the distance. A man is walking beside the front wagon with a dog running in front of him. The second is another group of 2 wheeled, grass topped wagons passing through a grassy meadow. A man with a rifle over his right shoulder and a red sash around his waist is walking to the left of the front wagon.
Any idea as to their Titles, and what they might be worth?
THanks.

JClymer
The Clymer has no interest in assisting anyone with any Clymer art. J Clymer or John Ford Clymer. Extremely discourteous and non user friendly group. Life magazine has a signature of J Clymer I believe the impressionist. However- we will never know.

Art by J. Clymer
I recently came across an original piece of art by J. Clymer, it is wild horses in hues of browns & greys. The glass was cracked in the frame, when removing the glass I noticed the artist signature. This is a very old picture / print / painting, and it has stuck to the back of the picture frame. I would like to find out if there is any monetary value to this art, as will be deciding factor whether or not to try to preserve this art. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Deb

John Clymer, painter of the west
You can look at the prices of the signed prints and "Posters" on the Clymer Museum webpage. The Museum is in Ellensburg, WA. I am a collector of his prints. They are the best researched subjects of all of the modern day painters of the fur trade subjects.

john clymer
I have an original oil painting of John Floyd Clymer the impressionist. It a painting of a harbor possibly during war. I have heard that he was born in the us,canda, and englend, but know nothing more specific. I would like to know what this painting is worth but noone seems to know anything. He has copied 3 painting by Claude Monet, some people wonder if there are anymore. If you have any info please email me. Thank you!

Clymer print
Indeed this is John Clymer's work... I have a metal tray and the tear sheet for the ad...it is called "Clocking At Daybreak"..and I LOVE it.. if I could find a print or even the ORIBINAL oil..I would buy it. His advertising work was much more varied than the Western fine art he did.. I happen to LOVE the advertising work, very much.
Congratulations..

Sherrie

Clymer print

I have a print of a black jockey riding a horse on a track with two men watching, and underneath it says The Clocker in the middle, it's signed by John Clymer, and on the left side it says From The Early Times Collection. With all this talk on the board about two Clymers, and noticing that the Clymer I Googled only did Western style paintings, I'm wondering what I've got. Any information would be appreciated!

John Clymer
I have a John Clymer impressionist painting of a river and perhaps a mill village, man in boat, small
bldg. and path on left shore. Would love to know more about this artist, apparently not John Ford Clymer according to his museum. Signed in left hand corner. Frame has #870712 on back and appears to be old and original. Any info. and approximate worth would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mystery Clymers
There are at least two John Clymer artists. Unfortunate and Clymer is not a common name. The impressionist/seascape one is nothing like the work of Clymer the illustrator/Western painter. I am still amazed that some that should know better still want to believe they are one in the same. Even the big auction houses have mis labeled one. Walt Reed is an authority and I reccomend anyone with questions go to him. He is located in NYC and founded "Illustration House" I believe. Just Google him.
I don't quite know why anyone would use the Smithsonian. Walt has written books on Clymer and knows his art very very well.

I agree on the quality of the impressionist Clymer. Some is pretty good and others I have seen are just terrible. Those may be student work or a fond admirer trying to "copy" that Clymer.

All the best in your respective researches.

Sherrie

Impressionist "Clymer" paintings
I am really trying to find out anything on Clymer the "impressionist". I have three originals and they are beautiful. I heard he was born in England but can not find out anymore. This is so frustrating because I love his work. I bought my "clymer's " in Charleston SC in the early '80's.

impressionist "Clymer" paintings
I'm a dealer in art. I too have stumbled into this situation. I travel far and wide across the US and I have seen thse impressionist works in Florida, Texas, and especially here in Southern California. One I had a few years ago sold at an auction house back east and they sold it as a Clymer (under $1000 hammer). I purchased a clipper ship one recently in Texas. Now, I've seen another one, and it's so bad, the color use is so dreadful, the scale of the figures is so far off, relative to the perspective etc., that I'm convinced that we are most definitely talking about two artists. I had just thought that perhaps Clymer's style loosened up greatly in his last years, but, now, after seeing this string of posts here, I believe this is surely not the case. The "Clymer" impressionist paintings are very, very new looking, with white, almost brand new canvas on the back side, and brand new looking stretchers! It's interesting to learn, here, that the museum disavows any connection between these new paintings and the artist John Ford Clymer.

Clymer Boys
Richard,
Anyone looking at the paintings can tell they are by different artists. The signatures are both consistent with each one. There is a John FLOYD Clymer listed here in AskArt..but he is not the one. The impressionist one is maybe Canadian I am told by one of the dealers. Go to Illustration House and talk to Walt Reed. Call the Clymer Museum in Washington.. you can Google the numbers. They will tell you that these are NOT John Ford Clymer's works. There is another one on Ebay now trying to pass as THE John Clymer. They are really making a lot of stuff up about the painting... I would think the family would be interested in preserving John's good name and reputation.

Sincerely,
Sherrie

Impressionist Clymer
I asked the Smithsonian staff to research John Clymer the impressionist and they could not find another Clymer beside John Ford. I find no John Clymer listed in any English artist search site. Iam becoming convinced that there is only one John Clymer artist and his middle name is Ford. We shall see.

Clymers...
Hi Tracey,
Thanks so much for the Clymer feedback... I have been battling these "other Clymers" for years.... I wish we could come up with who he is. I am a huge Clymer fan and sure hate to see the others sold for John Ford Clymer paintings.
I have three real ones and one I am sure is his but never had any authenication on it as itisn't signed. Can you family perhaps identify it?
Thanks again,

Sherrie

Two John Clymers
I too have seen auction houses selling the impressionist paintings signed by "John Clymer", saying it's John Ford Clymer. However, the Clymer family states that these impressionist-type pieces are NOT those of John FORD Clymer. They believe the other John Clymer was from England. I myself have looked for any information I can on him, but can find none.

I should note that I'm married to Mr. Clymers grandson, so I tend to believe the family when they state it is a different artist.

John Clymer
I own two impressionist Clymers. The Clymer museum believes that these impressionist paintings signed by John Clymer are done by a different artist. I find nothing on this mysterious impressionist John Clymer. I think the signatures on his western works and the impressionist works are similar. Some auction houses claim John Ford Clymer as the artist of these impressionist paintings. It is an interesting situation.

John Clymer
I have one Clymer and have seen many. Recently, I have seen several impressionist oils with a Clymer signature. News to me as I thought he was an illustrator and western painter. Does anyone know if Clymer ever painted impressionistic scenes?
