James Schucker The comment regarding the mural is most interesting. I am sitting in an office on the second floor of the snuff mill and have researched the history of the building quite thoroughly, and there is not a wall in the entire building that would support hanging a mural of that size without covering windows. The walls themselves are fieldstone inside and out, thus there would be no working directly on the walls themselves.
Another thought, the date must have been a bit later as the Lorillard Co turned 200 in 1960, having begun their work in lower manhattan and moved to the bronx in 1792 to a small mill. They built a second one in 1800 and the existing stone mill in 1840.
To your question, no I have no information on the mural except that I was just contacted by our archivist about it.

James Schucker Jimmy Schucker and his wife, Vona, were my back yard neighbors when I was growing up. He was quite an interesting man. I always enjoyed going into his studio and looking at his paintings. I'll never forget the day when, fresh out from college, I pointed out the "neatest" painting in the studio, and it turned out to be the only one he hadn't painted -- it was a Benton Clarke. Oops! Well, a few weeks later when I was visiting my parents, he walked over with the painting in hand and gave it to me.
I've since moved back into the family home, and there are 13 Schucker paintings adorning it - mostly family portraits. The thing I treasure the most, however, is a copy of a Little Black children's book that he illustrated. He gave it to me when I was two, with a message he wrote inside saying, "I'll bet you'll be able to read this book all by yourself in no time at all."

James Schucker A mural by this artist was mounted on the wall of the tea room at the NYC Botannical Gardens in the early 1950's. It was commissioned by the Lorillard Tobacco Co. to commemorate its 200 years growth which started with its first mill on this site. The painting , five feet by 48 feet , traces the story of Lorillaard's modest beginnings.
This painting seems to have fallen into oblivion by anyone at P. Lorillard. I was wondering if there is any trace of it anywhere.
