Gee, I hate to read that the artist has died. He and Jasper Johns seemed to have so much fun with their art. Does anyone know if Jasper Johns is still living?

A family member has a couple of photos, black & white, of RR's. They are signed and numbered. They are not collage or transfer works; they are stills of Florida scenery. Does anyone have any information on these works? I can't find anything on the web.

Transfer technique -- classroom (and eco) friendly
A technique that works well is to purchas a bottle of wintergreen oil. It can be found in any health food store. You simply apply the oil to the back of the image. It should be face down on the surface you are transfering to. Then, burnish the photo. Pull up the image and voila...it transfers!

Rauschenberg's technique
I have a video on Rauschenberg called, Man At Work. It is fasinating! I met Robert back in the early '90's while he exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art. I was a security guard at the time. I am a painter and I like to experiment at times and I have shown my work at galleries and restuarants. The main medium I work in is oils. My full time employment is teaching high school art. I have given art assignments based on collage, assemblage and junk art and pop art. I like to talk to my students about Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol, Pollock, etc. I am very interested if it could be divulged, the process of Rauschenberg's technique on photography transfers using photos, vegetable dyes and burnishing the printed photos polylaminate with water. I think he is brilliant and my favorite modern artist. His designs speak to me. Any ideas how he does the whole technique? I really want to know!

Chemical Sovent
Acetone will transfer images from a toner printer. It dissolves the toner and lets you transfer it to another piece of paper. It doesn't alway give the cleanest transfer but it does give you a "water stain" quality.

Questions about Mr. Rauschenberg's "Autobiography" 1968; it is a lithograph on three sheets of paper. In the middle part is a finger-print like image, if anyone know the content of this "finger print", your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

solvent transfer
Ive dont plenty of experimentation with image transfer. Rauschenberg primarilty uses water as a means to make his image transfers nowadays using high quality giclee printers that have water soluable ink. Back in the day he was using all sorts of solvents. I couldnt tell you which ones exactly, but ive had sucess with the chemical solvent Xylene. You can order it off the internet. You know thoses blender pens or "invisible ink" pens?...the main solvent in those is Xylene. The other important factor is being sure that you have the right printer etc. Keep in mind that printers are designed to print ink...not to have it stripped. Some toners can be stripped with solvent...inkjet printers will not work. Solvent based inks work best...but its hard to find a printer that uses that ink in an affordable way..they are usually wide format printers used for billboards and signs etc. The cheap way to go about image transfer is to use an inkjet printer and some fluid matte medium made by Golden or Liquitex. While it doesnt quite have the same appeal as solvent transfers, its still an image transfer.

Rauschenberg's Collage
I am interested to contact someone who saw Rauschenberg's exhibit at the Guggenheim several years ago, because I am interested on the responses that anyone had when viewing his work. Also if anyone knows why he was interested in representing his art through collage.

Rauschenberg 's technique
I've just seen an exhibit in Paris musée maillol about Rauschenberg which is one my favorite artists.
I'm very impressed with his collage and transfer and will be very interested to know what kind of technique he is using except the silkscreen technique.

From the NY Times on April 7,2001 LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A young woman in a two-piece bathing suit spreads a clear plastic dropcloth across the stage floor. She exits, returns with a bottle of gin and empties it in the center of the dropcloth. She fetches a bottle of vermouth, which she waves over the puddle of gin. She exits again, this time for a jar of olives with whose contents she garnishes the now spreading martini. Then she dives forward and slides exuberantly on her belly through the whole mess. Shortly she is joined by her boyfriend, and the two of them frolic like dolphins in a cocktail sea. The scene, a hilarious pantomime, works as a stand-alone snapshot, both an appreciation and sendup of suburban hedonism. But it occurs in the middle of a spectacular pileup of performance pieces that collectively celebrate the life and vision of the artist Robert Rauschenberg. A vibrant collaboration among the playwright Charles L. Mee, the experimental director Anne Bogart and Ms. Bogart's troupe, the SITI Company, the show is called "bobrauschenbergamerica." It was the high point of the 25th annual Humana Festival of New American Plays, which will conclude Sunday at the Actors Theater of Louisville. On the one hand, in its jumble of realistic and abstract imagery and its quirkily inquisitive spirit, the play is meant to emulate the style of Mr. Rauschenberg's well-known assemblages. On the other, it is also a kind of history lesson, tying the evolution of our culture in the 20th century to the education of the artist. Mr. Mee has incorporated citations from Walt Whitman, John Cage and Mr. Rauschenberg himself, among others, into his vivid script. The artist never appears as a character, but his mother does; in a clever framing device, Mr. Mee makes her the narrator. Emerging intermittently through the screen door of the family's house in Port Arthur, Tex., she recalls her son's typical childhood — he was born in 1925 — of bikes, barbecues and boyish pranks, and admits, with an irony supplied by the playwright, "art was not a part of our lives." The house, painted as a huge American flag, is the backdrop of Ms. Bogart's staging. She uses some of Mr. Rauschenberg's favorite props (taxidermically preserved animals) and found objects (an automobile tire) and her own animating visual sense to prove that Mrs. Rauschenberg is only literally correct. As usual, the festival consisted of six full-length plays and a stew of well- meaning gimmickry: five telephone plays, an hourlong sequence of minutes-long playlets by 16 writers; and an amusing serial play by Arthur Kopit, an apocalyptic cartoon delivered in three 10-minute segments. The festival was the first administered by Marc Masterson, who became artistic director of the Actors Theater last year, succeeding Jon Jory; they jointly put this year's program together, and perhaps not surprisingly, it was largely themeless, except for the notion that the theater is a perfect venue for the connection of abstract and concrete ideas.

Besides the fact that I will be writing a small 4 page essay on RR, I am doing a self portrait based on his methods and techniques. RR is an inspiration to me and if there is anyway that I could get more information about him it would be wonderful. Please, any information on his life background and influences would be greatly appreciated.
